Blackjack adds another layer. The objective is to finish closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding it, but published basic-strategy charts derive from the exact rules in use. Nothing in that arithmetic says your result for the hour must be a loss of exactly that amount. Variance still dominates the short run. But it does show why pace matters so much. Faster games, autoplay-style repetition where offered, side bets added to every round, and longer sessions all increase exposure even when your stake size never changes.
This is also why lower-edge bets can still cost a lot over time if they are made quickly and repeatedly. A small edge applied to many wagers can outrun a larger edge applied only a few times. The bet's price and the volume of action work together.
What betting systems do, and what they do not do
Most systems change only the order and size of your bets after wins or losses. They do not alter the probabilities built into the underlying wager.
A doubling progression is the standard example. After each loss, the next stake rises in an attempt to recover earlier losses plus a small gain. That can create many small winning sequences, which is why it feels persuasive. But the trade-off is severe: occasional losing runs become much more expensive, table limits stop the progression from expanding forever, and bankroll constraints do the same. The expected value of each underlying bet remains unchanged.
Flat betting behaves differently in the short run because it smooths stake size, but it does not reverse a negative edge either. Positive progressions, negative progressions, cancellation systems, and pattern-following systems all change variance and the shape of outcomes. None removes the house edge from the wager they sit on top of.
So the useful question is not which system wins. It is what each approach changes:

- the chance of a small session profit,
- the chance of a sharp drawdown, and
- how quickly you reach your own stop point or bankroll limit.
