24/7 Crypto Trading Is Rewriting Risk Controls and Customer Expectations

Crypto’s 24/7 market structure is changing more than trading hours. It is changing where risk shows up. CME Group’s move to enable round-the-clock trading for crypto futures and options shows how far that shift has reached into regulated finance. Before that change, CME shut on Friday afternoon while spot Bitcoin kept trading through the weekend, leaving hedgers unable to respond until Sunday evening when futures reopened and repriced to the new spot level.

Risk doesn’t disappear in a nonstop market

Continuous trading removes weekend chart gaps, but it does not remove the underlying danger. Martin Sumichrast, chairman of the board at Hawkeye Systems, said the risk is simply redistributed into the weakest part of the week: overnight sessions and weekends, when institutional desks are inactive and liquidity is thin. Once market makers step back, order books become shallower, spreads widen, and one large sell order can sweep through several price levels in a short span.

That matters even more on leveraged venues. Each move lower can trigger margin thresholds, forced liquidations become fresh sell orders, and the decline feeds on itself. The source points to October 10, 2025 as the most severe liquidation session in crypto history, with more than $19 billion in leveraged positions forcibly closed. Spot Bitcoin volatility reached 16.77% that day, compared with 3.32% recorded earlier while regulated markets were still open.

Jenna Wright, managing director for digital assets at LMAX Group, reads the same market structure differently. In her view, 24/7 access does not eliminate risk, but it lets institutions react in real time instead of waiting for the market to reopen. The harder question is whether market infrastructure has evolved enough to support always-on liquidity. She argues much of that buildout is still underway.

Legacy risk tools lose their footing without a daily close

Traditional finance built many of its controls around a fixed end of day. Once that anchor disappears, the old tools become less effective. Wright said end-of-day margin, batch settlement, and overnight funding assumptions all weaken in a market where prices can revalue at any moment.

The replacements look very different from the systems used in scheduled markets. She pointed to real-time collateral transfers, automated liquidation engines, and stablecoin settlement rails that move capital instantly across venues. Sumichrast made the same point in sharper terms, saying tools such as T+2 settlement and standard end-of-day margin calls are unusable when the clock never stops.

That shift is also reaching legacy post-trade infrastructure. DTCC, a core clearing institution in U.S. securities markets, is building 24/7 tokenized collateral rails on Chainlink. The system is targeted for launch in the fourth quarter of 2026 and is designed to move margin and collateral in near real time across traditional and crypto markets.

Retail interfaces often hide the difference in market conditions

Professional firms adjust execution tactics and risk limits when liquidity thins overnight or on weekends. Retail users usually do not see those structural differences on screen. Wright said market conditions in those hours are inherently different because fewer participants and market makers are active, and traders need a clear view of liquidity depth, pricing, and execution quality to understand what they are stepping into.

Ali Zane, chief executive of IMAX Credit Repair Firm and an adviser on digital-asset risk for consumers, said many apps flatten those distinctions. The same interface, the same green buy button, and the same one-tap confirmation can appear whether a user is trading in a deep session or the least liquid stretch of the week. In practice, a market order placed on a quiet Sunday and the same order placed on a busy Tuesday can produce very different execution, with no explanation presented in the app.

Always-on trading raises the bar for always-on support

Once trading, settlement, and payments run continuously, customers start expecting support to move at the same speed. Wright said a problem appearing at 3 a.m. quickly turns into an expectation of a response at 3 a.m. That is an operational requirement, not a branding line.

Zane argued the industry helped create that expectation through its own marketing. If a platform offers access 24 hours a day but handles security issues only during business hours, customers are left exposed during the overnight and weekend periods when thin liquidity can make disruptions more damaging. Wright added that sustainable delivery depends less on adding staff and more on investing in automation, monitoring, and operational resilience. Stretching manual processes across a full day invites fatigue and missed alerts.

Circuit breakers remain a live debate

Regulators are also weighing whether forced trading pauses belong in crypto. The issue came into focus in South Korea this February after an operational mistake at Bithumb. On February 6, a promotional payout was processed with Bitcoin entered where the system expected won, and customers were incorrectly credited with 620,000 BTC, a phantom value of about $43 billion.

Some recipients sold immediately, the exchange price fell sharply, and by the time trading was halted around 1,788 BTC had been sold into the drop. Bithumb covered the loss from its own reserves. The Bank of Korea used the case to support stock-style circuit breakers, while regulators separately ordered exchanges to reconcile internal ledgers with actual holdings every five minutes.

Sumichrast questioned whether local pauses can work for a borderless asset, arguing that traders blocked on one venue can shift to offshore exchanges or decentralized protocols within seconds. Wright said circuit breakers may reduce immediate execution risk only if they are applied consistently across venues. If implementation is uneven, liquidity will move elsewhere. She noted that LMAX already uses other safeguards, including volatility bands, clip size limits, working order limits, net open position limits, and message-rate controls.
