80,001 ETH was transferred from a wallet associated with Ethereum co-founder and Consensys CEO Joseph Lubin, sparking immediate market unease. Yet the same address still holds 243,300 ETH, worth roughly $370 million, indicating the move was not a complete exit.
80k ETH transfer: not a full liquidation
Lookonchain’s analysis shows that despite the large outflow from the previously dormant wallet, the remaining balance was not liquidated. Some analysts interpret the move as a partial rebalancing of assets rather than a market departure. Still, the sheer size has fueled speculation about potential selling pressure. The funds' final destination remains unknown — it could be heading to an exchange for open-market sale or simply shifting between wallets.
ETH sheds 24% in a week, technical support in jeopardy
Over the past seven days, ETH has lost about 24% of its value, trading at $1,539 as of the news. Trading volume surged 35% in 24 hours to $35.3 billion. The second-largest cryptocurrency now sits 68% below its all-time high; year-to-date losses amount to 47%. Technical analysts warn that if key support levels break, ETH could slide to the $800–$900 range. The Lubin-linked transfer amplifies concerns over market fragility.
Dormant wallets wake up: a recurring pattern
Several long-dormant Ethereum wallets have reawakened in recent months. In January, a whale wallet that had been idle for nine years moved 50,000 ETH to Gemini, keeping 85,000 ETH behind. Another three-year-dormant wallet withdrew 10,000 ETH and promptly swapped it for 17.7 million USDC. Conversely, some wallets inactive for one to four years accumulated a combined 18,000 ETH during the recent downturn without major sales. These examples underscore that activity from old wallets alone does not dictate market direction.
Lubin stays silent; community relies on on-chain data
Joseph Lubin, co-founder of Ethereum and CEO of Consensys — the firm behind MetaMask, Infura, and Layer 2 solution Linea — has not publicly commented on the transfer. A day before the flagged transaction, he posted on X about the STRATO token sale, calling it a “strong start.” With no official statement, market debate currently hinges on on-chain data and historical precedent.
