On January 13, 2026, venture capital powerhouse Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) released its annual crypto forecast, outlining three transformative trends it believes will push the industry “beyond crypto.” The firm, which manages over $45 billion in assets, sees prediction markets, zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs), and a novel concept called “staked media” as the next major frontiers.
Prediction Markets Go Bigger, Smarter, and More Transparent
Researcher Andy Hall argues that prediction markets will continue their explosive growth by integrating AI and crypto to improve scalability, auditability, and resistance to bots. “We’ll need to lean on new technologies like AI, which can improve the survey-taking experience; and crypto, which can provide new ways to prove that poll/survey respondents are not bots but humans,” Hall said. This fusion could transform prediction markets from niche gambling platforms into verifiable information aggregation tools for public opinion, decision-making, and beyond.
zkVM: A 10,000x Efficiency Leap for Cryptographic Proofs
Analyst Justin Thaler predicts that zkVMs will reach a breakthrough where the overhead for generating proofs drops to just 10,000x the original computation, with memory footprints measured in hundreds of megabytes. This makes them cheap enough to run on mobile phones. “It will finally become possible to get ‘cryptographic proofs of correctness’ for a reasonable price overhead,” Thaler stated. Such efficiency would massively improve cross-chain bridging, on-chain verification of off-chain activity, and Layer 2 scaling, unlocking use cases previously considered impractical.
Staked Media: Verifiable Skin in the Game
Robert Hackett from a16z’s crypto editorial team introduced the concept of “staked media,” where publishers put verifiable stakes—financial or otherwise—behind their content to demonstrate commitment to truth. “Credibility comes neither from feigning detachment nor making unsubstantiated claims; instead, it comes from having stakes that you can make transparent and verifiable commitments about,” Hackett explained. This model doesn’t replace traditional media but adds a new signal: “Not just ‘trust me, I’m neutral,’ but ‘here’s what I’m willing to risk, and how you can check that I’m telling the truth.’”
Last week, a16z announced it had raised over $15 billion for various venture projects, naming AI and crypto as “key architectures of the future.” The firm stated its mission is to “ensure that America wins the next 100 years of technology,” starting with these two domains. The 2026 predictions align with that vision, showing how crypto innovation can extend far beyond finance into media, governance, and trust infrastructure.
