Venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz (A16z) has unveiled three predictions on how it sees crypto going “beyond crypto” this year. In a blog post, A16z analysts released three predictions covering prediction markets, zero-knowledge virtual machines (zkVMs), and a novel concept called “staked media.”

Prediction Markets: Bigger, Broader, and Smarter

A16z researcher Andy Hall says prediction markets will continue their rapid expansion by integrating with crypto and artificial intelligence (AI) to increase transparency, auditability, and handle much larger volumes. “We'll need to lean on new technologies like AI, which can improve the survey-taking experience; and crypto, which can provide new ways to prove that poll/survey respondents are not bots but humans, among other things,” Hall stated. This integration is expected to make prediction markets more scalable and resistant to manipulation.

zkVM Breakthrough: 10,000x Overhead Reduction

Analyst Justin Thaler predicts that zkVMs (zero-knowledge virtual machines) will achieve a “10,000x overhead” with memory footprints in the hundreds of megabytes, making them fast enough to run on phones and extremely cheap. Thaler believes it will become feasible to obtain “cryptographic proofs of correctness” at a reasonable cost. This advancement could enable stronger chain-bridging, easier on-chain verification of off-chain activity, more efficient Layer 2 (L2) scaling, and a host of other use cases. The technology promises to lower the barrier for deploying zero-knowledge proofs across the ecosystem.

Staked Media: Skin in the Game for Credibility

Robert Hackett of A16z’s crypto editorial team predicts the rise of “staked media,” a system that requires media companies to put verifiable financial or reputational stakes behind their content. In an era where AI and bots can pump out unlimited content from any point of view, staked media offers a way to prove credibility through transparent commitments. “In this model, credibility comes neither from feigning detachment nor making unsubstantiated claims; instead, it comes from having stakes that you can make transparent and verifiable commitments about,” Hackett explained. He sees it as a supplement to existing media, not a replacement, providing a signal of “here's what I'm willing to risk, and how you can check that I'm telling the truth.”

A16z’s Broader Vision: AI and Crypto as Key Architectures

Last week, A16z announced it had raised over $15 billion for various venture projects, naming AI and crypto as “key architectures of the future.” The firm stated: “Our mission is ensuring that America wins the next 100 years of technology. That starts with winning the key architectures of the future – AI and crypto. It continues with applying those technologies to biology, health, defense, public safety, education, and entertainment. And it culminates with the American government adopting these technologies to defend and advance American interests.” The predictions align with this vision, highlighting sectors where crypto can evolve beyond its current boundaries.
