Aave founder and CEO Stani Kulechov issued a stark warning on X: mounting stress in private credit markets may spill into decentralized finance, especially if real-world assets (RWAs) are integrated without proper transparency.
High Rates Squeeze Borrowers, Redemption Pressures Mount
Since the Federal Reserve started aggressive rate hikes in March 2022, borrowing costs surged from near zero to above 5% by mid-2023. Many private credit borrowers locked in loans during the low-rate era and now face heavy repayment pressure. Market signals already flash red — the VanEck BDC Income ETF dropped roughly 15% over one year, Blue Owl Capital shares plunged about 50%, and several major alternative asset managers lost roughly 20% in market value.
The private credit sector ballooned after the 2008 financial crisis as regulators tightened bank rules. Key players include Apollo Global Management, Blackstone, Ares Management, KKR, and Carlyle Group. Kulechov noted the global private credit market totals roughly $1.8–$2 trillion — still small compared to the $130 trillion global bond market.
Redemption Waves Force Liquidity Injections
Redemption demand is hitting large funds hard. Blackstone's flagship private credit vehicle BCRED, with $82 billion in assets, received $3.7 billion in redemption requests in Q1 2026. Blackstone injected $400 million to support liquidity. Similarly, the BlackRock HPS Corporate Lending Fund gated withdrawals after heavy redemptions, and Blue Owl faced $2.9 billion in investor withdrawals in late 2025.
Kulechov described the situation as “a strange place” for private credit but maintained that the sector's overall risk remains manageable.
DeFi Could Become Exit Liquidity — RWA Risks loom
His biggest concern: institutions might offload distressed credit products into blockchain markets as tokenized RWAs, making DeFi investors the ultimate exit liquidity. He wrote: “DeFi should not become Wall Street’s exit liquidity.” Many on-chain yield seekers overlook the underlying liquidity and duration risks embedded in RWA strategies.
On the flip side, Kulechov acknowledged that blockchain infrastructure — with transparent smart contract enforcement of redemption rules and collateral conditions — could improve accountability over traditional private credit structures. The key is ensuring transparency before RWAs go mainstream in DeFi.
