Stablecoins are gaining rapid traction across the cryptocurrency ecosystem, and financial institutions are racing to build and integrate them into their business models. Agora, a stablecoin infrastructure company, has raised $50 million in a Series A funding round led by Dragonfly Capital, a prominent venture capital firm known for backing innovative crypto projects. The capital will be used to accelerate the development of Agora's full-stack stablecoin platform, which is purpose-built to support the next generation of digital finance applications.
Funding Details and the AUSD Stablecoin
Agora is the issuer of AUSD, a stablecoin that differentiates itself from traditional centralized counterparts by sharing the revenue generated from the operation of the token's underlying reserves with its partners. This model incentivizes commercial partners to adopt Agora's solution. Despite this innovative approach, AUSD remains a small player in the stablecoin market, with a market capitalization of $150 million — a fraction of the multi-billion dollar stablecoin whales like USDT and USDC. Nonetheless, the unique revenue-sharing mechanism has drawn attention from potential users seeking a more equitable distribution of the profits generated by stablecoin reserves.
White-Label Platform: Empowering Third-Party Issuance
Beyond issuing its own stablecoin, Agora aims to enable other companies to launch their own stablecoins seamlessly. The company recently launched a white-label platform that simplifies the process of issuing, managing, and operating stablecoins for third parties. According to Agora: “No need to manage complex infrastructure, secure banking relationships, liquidity, or build from scratch – Agora handles it all. We were long believers that to truly build a platform you needed to start with building the network.” This approach allows financial institutions, fintech firms, and even non-financial companies to enter the stablecoin space without incurring the heavy costs and technical barriers traditionally associated with such ventures.
Focus on Non-US Markets
Agora has strategically chosen to concentrate its operations outside the United States. Co-founder Jan Van Eck explained that non-US financial institutions are more aggressively pursuing stablecoin solutions due to factors such as high inflation in local currencies, cross-border payment frictions, and simpler regulatory frameworks. “A lot of different financial institutions outside of the U.S., I would say, are looking more aggressively and will be quicker to move than some of the companies in the U.S. A lot of companies in the U.S. are talking about it because it’s the topic du jour,” he stated. This focus allows Agora to avoid the complex and evolving regulatory landscape in the U.S. while capitalizing on the immediate demand for stablecoin infrastructure in emerging markets and regions like Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
Industry Context and Outlook
The stablecoin market has grown exponentially, with total supply surpassing $170 billion as of mid-2025. Demand is driven by the need for efficient cross-border payments, decentralized finance (DeFi) liquidity, and a reliable digital dollar alternative. Agora's funding round, led by Dragonfly Capital, signals that venture capital sees long-term value in companies that provide plug-and-play stablecoin solutions. The white-label platform, combined with the revenue-sharing model of AUSD, positions Agora as a potential enabler for a new wave of branded stablecoins. However, competition is fierce, with incumbents like Circle (USDC) and Tether (USDT) dominating the market, and numerous other startups vying for market share. Agora's success will depend on its ability to attract partners, navigate regulatory hurdles across jurisdictions, and scale its infrastructure to handle growing transaction volumes. The company's international-first strategy may give it a first-mover advantage in regions where stablecoin adoption is still nascent but rapidly accelerating.
