A user known as Cprkrn has regained access to a Bitcoin wallet that had been locked for years. Blockchain records show that on May 13, five transactions totaling 5 BTC were sent from the address “14VJy…ofuE6,” funds that had not moved since early 2015.

According to his account, the problem began years ago when he created three complex passwords on blockchain.info, later changed one of them, and then forgot it. That left the wallet inaccessible for a long stretch. Over the last eight weeks, he used Claude alongside BTCRecover and Python scripts to test password combinations, carrying out about 34 billion brute-force attempts. He said the AI was most useful in interpreting and organizing password clues rather than acting alone.

Old backups and scattered records led to the breakthrough

After standard recovery methods failed, Cprkrn searched through old college notebooks, an outdated laptop, and digital archives collected across many years. He uploaded the material to Claude, which processed data from two Mac computers, two external drives, notes imported from Apple Notes, and messages stored in iCloud, Gmail, and X. In total, more than 1 GB of data was reviewed.

The key discovery was an old backup file dated December 2019, found on one of the older computers. He also extracted a mnemonic phrase from his notebooks. With Claude’s help, he decoded the password protecting that backup and regained access to the private keys of the wallet.

Debate follows over what AI actually did

Cprkrn said that across the recovery process, Claude was involved in attempts covering roughly 3.4 trillion passwords through various recovery tools, while the total AI bill came to just $15. At the same time, he did not provide direct proof that Claude actively scanned his devices on its own. What he did share was a blockchain transaction link showing that wallet activity took place.

That distinction sparked debate in the community. Reddit user MeteorSwarmGallifrey argued that Claude “did nothing beyond searching files,” saying the episode was more about data retrieval than actual password cracking by a chatbot.

Lost wallet recovery remains a major crypto issue

Difficulty accessing wallets is a recurring problem across the digital asset market. Industry estimates cited in the report place between 2.3 million and 4 million BTC beyond reach, or roughly 11% to 19% of total supply. Forgotten passwords, lost seed phrases, and other mistakes account for much of that inaccessible supply.

The case has renewed attention on how AI tools may help piece together wallet credentials from old files, devices, and written notes. In this instance, the public evidence rests on the on-chain transfers: a wallet dormant for years was accessed again, and 5 BTC was moved out.
