The Akon City project, a high-profile initiative by singer and entrepreneur Akon to build a futuristic cryptocurrency-powered city in Senegal, has been officially terminated. The termination follows an amicable agreement between Akon and Senegal's coastal development agency, SAPCO (Société d'Aménagement et de Promotion des Côtes et des Zones Touristiques du Sénégal). Serigne Mamadou Mboup, SAPCO's general manager, confirmed the news to a Senegalese news agency, stating that the Akon City project 'no longer exists.'

Background and Reasons for Termination

Launched in 2020 with great fanfare, Akon City was envisioned as a $6 billion smart city that would operate entirely on Akon's own cryptocurrency, Akoin. The first phase was scheduled for completion by the end of 2023, with the second phase running from 2024 to 2029, culminating in a fully functional crypto city. However, the project faced years of inactivity and public skepticism.

According to a Bloomberg report, SAPCO issued a final ultimatum to Akon in 2024 demanding that construction begin. When Akon failed to comply, SAPCO moved to terminate the agreement. Mboup explained: 'Fortunately, an agreement has been reached between SAPCO and the developer Alioune Badara Thiam [Akon].' The land originally allocated for Akon City will now be used for a different, more practical development.

Investor Fallout and Controversy

The delays prompted early backers who purchased Akoin tokens to demand refunds. In a late 2022 interview, Akon insisted the project was still on track and even revealed plans to retire in the city. These assurances did little to appease token holders, some of whom levied accusations of fraud against the celebrity developer. The value of Akoin has since plummeted, leaving many investors in a precarious position.

The New 'Realistic' Project

Despite the cancellation, Akon is not walking away from the site entirely. According to Mboup, Akon has retained 8 hectares of land, which will be part of a much larger project covering over 500 hectares backed by SAPCO. The new initiative is being described as more 'realistic' and 'pragmatic' compared to the original crypto-centric vision.

'What he is preparing with us is a realistic project, which SAPCO will fully support,' Mboup said, adding that there is 'a good collaboration to come' between Akon and the company. The original Akon City was to include hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, film studios, and other futuristic amenities. It remains unclear how the new project will differ from these initial plans, but it likely will not rely on cryptocurrency as its foundational economic model.

Lessons for Crypto-Backed Development

The demise of Akon City serves as a cautionary tale for celebrity-endorsed crypto projects and large-scale blockchain-based infrastructure initiatives. While the concept of a crypto-powered smart city captured imaginations, the lack of concrete progress, regulatory hurdles, and governance issues ultimately doomed the venture. It underscores the gap between marketing hype and the complex realities of real estate development in emerging markets.

Senegal's government appears optimistic about the new direction. SAPCO's general director emphasized that the new project will have full institutional support, suggesting a shift away from speculative crypto elements toward more sustainable economic development. As for Akon, he has not publicly commented on the termination, but his continued involvement in the area indicates he remains committed to contributing to Senegal's development, albeit through a less grandiose lens.
