Algorand Foundation has laid out a detailed roadmap to make its blockchain quantum-resistant by 2027, targeting both account infrastructure and consensus-layer cryptography. The plan arrives as research from Google suggests breaking current encryption could require fewer quantum resources than previously thought, and as multiple governments demand earlier compliance.

Falcon Signatures Lead the Account Upgrade

Chief Technology Officer Bruno Martins said the foundation will first deploy new account structures based on Falcon, a quantum-resistant signature scheme selected by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology as a post-quantum standard. These Falcon-based accounts are designed to maintain full blockchain functionality while creating a long-term security backbone. Alongside account changes, the consensus mechanism will undergo a cryptographic overhaul: components lacking quantum resistance will be replaced, and accounts participating in consensus will face new security requirements. Martins confirmed the foundation is exploring a hybrid security model that pairs traditional digital signatures with quantum-resistant alternatives to ease the transition.

Google Study, Government Mandates Stir Urgency

A Google research paper published earlier this year identified Algorand as one of the most quantum-ready blockchain networks currently operating, while also warning that practical quantum attacks could arrive earlier than many expect. France's cybersecurity agency ANSSI has said it will stop certifying products that do not include quantum-resistant encryption, pushing organizations to adopt quantum-safe technologies before 2030. The U.S. National Security Agency has directed all new national security systems to use approved quantum-resistant algorithms starting in 2027, with older systems to be phased out by 2030.

Industry Rivals Also Gearing Up

Algorand is not alone in this race. Ethereum and Solana developers continue researching quantum-proof solutions; Tezos recently unveiled a prototype blockchain designed to resist quantum attacks; Circle published its own quantum-readiness roadmap for the Arc blockchain. While debate continues over the exact timeline of a practical quantum computer, multiple recent studies suggest machines capable of threatening current cryptography could emerge before 2030. Algorand's 2027 milestone gives the network a roughly one-year buffer to align with regulatory deadlines and complete internal migration before the most aggressive estimated threat horizon.
