Algorand Foundation has released a quantum-resistant roadmap and set an end-2027 target for upgrading the network toward full quantum resilience. The first stage, according to the plan, begins this year and includes post-quantum accounts, multisignature wallets, and staking support. Later phases are expected to extend into core protocol layers and infrastructure.
The rollout starts with accounts and wallet security
The roadmap makes clear that Algorand is not limiting the effort to user-facing tools. The foundation said the work will expand across multiple parts of the protocol over the next several years, with the aim of making the broader Algorand ecosystem quantum resilient by the end of 2027. It also said the technical groundwork for this push dates back to 2022.
The urgency comes from the cryptographic foundations used across most major blockchains today. Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana, among others, rely on elliptic curve cryptography (ECC) to secure wallets and transactions. That protection remains in place today, but cryptographers broadly hold that sufficiently powerful quantum computers could, in theory, break current algorithms in the future, putting the security model behind private keys at risk.
Quantum migration is becoming an industry-wide agenda
Algorand’s plan arrives as post-quantum migration gains traction well beyond one network. The source material notes that Google has already started integrating post-quantum cryptographic standards into its own infrastructure and is aiming for a full upgrade by 2029. The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology, or NIST, is also advancing standardization work on post-quantum algorithms and has set retirement timelines for some older cryptographic systems.
Within crypto, other ecosystems are also moving. The Ethereum Foundation announced a dedicated post-quantum security initiative earlier this year to study safe transition paths for wallets, applications and validator nodes. Solana has also published a proposal examining how users and the network could migrate to quantum-resistant cryptography if the threat becomes more immediate.
Foundation says waiting for “Q-Day” is not an option
The Algorand Foundation said blockchain networks cannot wait until the so-called “Q-Day” arrives before acting. Chris Peikert, the foundation’s chief scientist, said the complexity of upgrading a live blockchain protocol is often underestimated. Migrating a large system that is already in production can take years, he said, and the probability of quantum attacks against traditional cryptography rises as the century progresses.
If the roadmap stays on schedule, the foundation said Algorand could complete its transition before NIST’s retirement window for traditional cryptographic standards and three years ahead of the upgrade deadline set by the U.S. National Security Agency for national security systems.
