According to Bitcoin analyst James Check, that scenario could put addresses with exposed public keys at risk, especially wallets dating back to the Satoshi era. Viewed in isolation, $145 billion looks overwhelming. Put into the context of Bitcoin’s market depth, exchange flows, and derivatives turnover, the same number looks more like a supply event the market could work through over months rather than years.

A rational attacker would have little reason to dump everything at once

The report also challenges the idea of an immediate market-smashing sell-off. Check’s view is that a one-shot liquidation assumes irrational behavior. Any actor capable of accessing such a large cache of Bitcoin would still face the same basic constraint: selling too much too fast destroys the value of what they hold.

If profit is the goal, execution strategy matters. A sophisticated attacker would have incentives to sell in stages, stretch the process over time, and possibly hedge through derivatives instead of flooding the spot market at once. That would not remove the shock. It would still raise volatility and could weigh on the market for an extended period, but the mechanics look different from a total collapse scenario.

The harder question is whether Bitcoin should freeze vulnerable coins

The article ultimately frames governance as the real fault line. If quantum risk becomes urgent, the most divisive issue may not be market absorption at all, but whether the Bitcoin community should step in. One example mentioned is BIP-361, a proposal tied to the idea of forcibly freezing old Satoshi-era coins before they can be stolen through a quantum attack.

That debate cuts into Bitcoin’s core rules. A freeze would mean making an exception for certain coins in the name of security. Refusing to act would preserve censorship resistance and decentralized norms, while leaving the network to deal with the consequences through market behavior and technical migration.
