Odaily reported, citing The Wall Street Journal, that US government export controls and access restrictions on Anthropic’s Fable 5 / Mythos 5 models were partly driven by Amazon’s cybersecurity research and by communications between AWS CEO Andy Jassy and the White House. The dispute has moved Anthropic’s model safety issues into the regulatory arena, while also placing Amazon’s role in the process under scrutiny.

According to the report, the research submitted by Amazon was based on a series of prompt-based tests. During those tests, researchers were able to induce Fable 5 to output sensitive information that could be used for cyberattacks. Those findings raised safety concerns and became part of the material considered as the US government assessed risks tied to Fable 5 / Mythos 5.

Andy Jassy then escalated the findings to the US government level, prompting the White House to take further restrictive measures. The measures described in the source include barring foreign users from accessing the model, alongside broader export controls and access restrictions. As a result, Amazon has been described as a key force behind the regulatory intervention.

Former US Commerce Department official Kate Koren said the White House’s existing policy stance toward Anthropic may also have affected the decision-making process. Anthropic and the White House have had disagreements over AI safety boundaries, including Anthropic’s refusal to allow its models to be used for mass surveillance or lethal autonomous weapons systems. Those differences form part of the policy context surrounding the restrictions.

The report also noted that Anthropic and the White House had eased tensions earlier this year and expanded cooperation. However, the latest dispute over Fable 5 / Mythos 5 may again intensify tensions between the two sides. The issue centers not only on model outputs, but also on the intersection of corporate security research, government-level communication, and the boundaries for how AI models should be used.
