Anthropic has rolled out Claude for Word, giving Claude the ability to edit Word documents directly and return suggestions through tracked changes. With this release, Anthropic now has integrations across Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, completing its Office trio.

Word editing features focus on review-heavy workflows

The new plugin is built to fit into existing document workflows instead of replacing them. One feature lets Claude read comments inside a file, edit the linked text based on those instructions, and send the output back as tracked changes, so reviewers can accept or reject each edit one by one. Another allows users to draft inside an existing template while keeping heading styles and bullet formatting intact, with support for referencing separately uploaded source files.

Two more functions target long and heavily revised documents. Claude can scan an entire file for inconsistent terminology, broken cross-references, and numbering mistakes. Users can also highlight a specific passage and ask for a rewrite limited to that section, leaving the rest of the document’s styling and automatic numbering untouched. That narrow editing scope matters in documents that have gone through repeated revisions.

Saved “skills” turn recurring processes into reusable tools

Anthropic is also adding a workflow layer through Turn workflows into skills. Companies can package repeatable processes such as contract clause review, compliance memo drafting, or quarterly report formatting into reusable skills, letting team members run those tasks without rebuilding prompts each time.

The Office plugins can also share context within the same conversation. Financial figures from Excel can be pulled into a Word memo, and long documents can be turned into a PowerPoint presentation structure without copying text across apps and restating instructions.

Beta limitations remain, with enterprise access only for now

At this stage, Claude for Word supports only .docx and .docm files. Older .doc and .rtf formats need to be saved as .docx first. The feature is available only to Claude Team and Enterprise users, while individual plans are not included.

Anthropic also says the current version is not recommended for final legal documents or highly sensitive data. Productivity software has long been a battleground for major tech companies. Microsoft is pushing Copilot across Office, while Anthropic is entering the same ecosystem through plugins and putting document review at the center of its pitch.
