Apple is going against the AI grain. At WWDC on June 8, the company will unveil iOS 27 with a redesigned Siri that prioritizes forgetting over remembering, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The key features: auto-deleting conversations and differential privacy.
Auto-Delete: Conversations Wipe After 30 Days
While ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude race to store more user data, Apple's new Siri offers three options: keep conversations forever, delete after one year, or erase completely after 30 days. The setting mirrors iMessage's auto-delete feature. Unlike ChatGPT's incognito mode—which only skips saving the current session but leaves memory intact—Apple's deletion wipes past records from both device and cloud.
Differential Privacy: Memory Without Identity
Apple also introduces differential privacy for Siri's AI memory. The technique adds mathematical noise to stored data, so the AI can recall patterns (e.g., what type of questions you ask) but cannot trace them back to you. Memory stays on-device, not on servers, limiting exposure even in a breach. Apple has used differential privacy for autocorrect and voice recognition, but this is its first application in a chatbot context.
The trade-off is real: Gurman notes that while short-term use remains smooth, long-term memory accumulation lags behind ChatGPT and others. Your Siri may never truly "know" you—Apple is pitching that as a feature, not a bug.
A Decade of Privacy, Now Tested by AI-Savvy Users
Apple's privacy-first branding has worked before—iMessage encryption, App Tracking Transparency (costing Meta billions), and constant comparisons to Google and Meta. But this time, the audience includes users already hooked on ChatGPT's persistent memory. Siri has long been seen as a limited assistant, and Apple's AI integration has been slow (iOS 18's Apple Intelligence missed expectations). With iOS 27, Apple bets that a forgetful but private Siri can win back trust. Whether that bet pays off will be known after June 8.
