Arbitrum DAO has passed an emergency proposal to unlock $71 million worth of ETH to address the $290 million exploit that affected Kelp DAO. The move is designed to mitigate the cascading effects of the attack and restore stability in the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem.
Background
Kelp DAO, a key liquid restaking protocol on Arbitrum, suffered a massive exploit that drained rsETH tokens. In response, Kelp DAO collaborated with Aave to burn 17,132 rsETH and temporarily halt withdrawals. Although Kelp DAO later achieved a 100% backing ratio after recovery efforts, market confidence remained fragile.
Vote Details
The governance vote passed with overwhelming support. The unlocked ETH will be used for victim compensation, legal actions, and security upgrades. During the vote, ARB token surged 1.68%, while ETH dipped 0.45%, indicating positive market reception.
Ecosystem Impact
The incident highlights Arbitrum's governance capability in handling security crises. The exploit exposed risks in cross-protocol interactions, prompting more projects to enhance audits and insurance mechanisms. With funds unfrozen, capital inflow to Arbitrum DeFi is expected to recover.
Outlook
Arbitrum Foundation pledged to continue monitoring protocol security and enforcing stricter smart contract standards. Kelp DAO has initiated bug fixes and a compensation plan. Analysts believe such swift governance responses will boost long-term investor confidence in Arbitrum.
