Argentine authorities have taken a landmark step by ordering Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, to freeze over $3.5 million in assets linked to Rainbowex, a suspected massive pyramid scheme. The operation involved 22 search warrants, the detention of 10 individuals in San Pedro, and two Red Notice international warrants for Malaysian nationals. This marks one of the first formal interactions between Argentina's judiciary and Tether to execute an asset freeze.
Coordinated Efforts with Private Sector
Tether, which centrally issues USDT, can block funds by blacklisting wallets associated with illicit activity. The success of this operation relied heavily on private sector collaboration. Argentine exchanges like Lemon and blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis provided technical support, offering database insights and data analysis expertise. According to sources close to the case, these institutions "put all the information contained in their databases, as specialists in their areas to assist in the data analysis processes."
How Rainbowex Operated
Rainbowex masqueraded as a legitimate crypto platform promising high returns through trading and transfers. However, investigations revealed it was a closed-loop system with no connection to public blockchains. When investors attempted to withdraw their earnings, the system refused, triggering a wave of complaints. Authorities also discovered that Rainbowex hired actors to pose as executives. Polish national Maurycy Lyczko admitted receiving $1,500 for appearing at an awards event designed to lend legitimacy to the scheme.
Growing Vigilance Against Crypto Crime
The rise of such pyramid schemes has alarmed Argentine regulators. The Security Ministry has intensified surveillance, listing these activities as priority targets for preventive measures. This case follows a broader crackdown on crypto-related crimes, with authorities vowing to patrol cyberspace for crypto criminals. The investigation remains ongoing, with officials coordinating with Tether and international law enforcement to trace additional funds and suspects.
