AVAX is trading near $9.70 and remains capped below $10, even as U.S. digital commodity classification, protocol upgrades, subnet expansion, and RWA activity strengthen Avalanche’s underlying fundamentals.

Avalanche’s native token AVAX is trading around $9.67, with a market capitalization near $3.88 billion and 24-hour spot volume of about $226.7 million. Yahoo Finance data show AVAX closing at $9.6793 on March 26, 2026, after opening near $9.67, extending a tight range that has lasted for several sessions. CoinGecko, which combines spot and derivatives activity, puts daily volume at roughly $1.01 billion, up 61.30% from the previous day. Activity has picked up. Price has not.

AVAX remains stuck below the $10 level

Historical pricing through early March shows AVAX spending most of its time in the $9 to $10 zone. CoinMarketCap data place recent closes between $9.17 and $9.75 during the first week of the month, including a March 6 open at $9.3838 and close at $9.4534. Investing.com also shows AVAX closing at $8.99 on March 22 after trading between $8.93 and $9.34, with 5.19 million AVAX changing hands that day. Taken together, the pattern points to consolidation in a large-cap Layer 1 token rather than a directional breakout.

U.S. “digital commodity” status arrives with protocol upgrades

March brought a series of structural developments for Avalanche. Phemex reported that the U.S. SEC and CFTC formally described Avalanche as a “digital commodity” on March 17, 2026, giving the asset a clearer position in certain regulatory settings alongside assets such as Bitcoin. At the same time, CoinMarketCap highlighted a network update that implemented three proposals: ACP-226, which lets validators adjust minimum block times dynamically; ACP-204, which adds support for the secp256r1 cryptographic curve used in Apple FaceID and TouchID; and ACP-181, which stabilizes the validator set for short periods to reduce gas costs and improve cross-chain reliability.

The changes target speed, cost, and network stability. They also matter for mobile-facing use cases and cross-chain applications. Avalanche had already rolled out the Octane hard fork in May 2025, which reduced subnet deployment costs by about 83%, cut the minimum base fee by 99.6%, and introduced dynamic fee algorithms designed to limit spam during periods of heavier demand.

Subnets, RWAs, and institutional activity stay in focus

Avalanche’s longer-term case is increasingly tied to subnets and real-world asset tokenization. Yahoo Finance previously reported that the Avalanche Foundation committed 4 million AVAX, worth about $290 million at the time, through its Multiverse incentive program to attract gaming, DeFi, and NFT projects into the subnet ecosystem. CoinMarketCap also referenced the Evergreen Subnet initiative for institutions, along with RWA-related partners such as BlackRock and Securitize that are working on on-chain products intended to settle on Avalanche infrastructure.

Binance added more ecosystem detail in a recent research piece, pointing to more than 75 active subnets, a $40 million Retro9000 rewards program, and the launch of a Nasdaq-listed AVAX treasury firm and a spot AVAX ETF as signs of rising institutional involvement.

Fundamentals improve, but price action stays muted

Even with regulatory clarity, protocol upgrades, and ecosystem expansion, AVAX has yet to break out of its range. WazirX described the token in its March 2026 outlook as technically weak but fundamentally supported, identifying $10 as a key support-turned-resistance level and outlining a medium-term consolidation range between $9 and $11. In the broader Layer 1 sector, Avalanche’s sideways move near $9.70 looks less like the sharp swings seen in smaller altcoins and more like the pattern often seen in major smart-contract platforms, where on-chain progress shows up before price does.
