Base, the Ethereum Layer 2 network incubated by Coinbase, has announced the integration of Succinct’s SP1 zkVM and TEE solutions as part of an effort to strengthen its cryptographic security model. The move does not mean Base is becoming a full ZK Rollup, but it does mark a meaningful upgrade to how the network handles finality and withdrawals back to Ethereum.
Reducing reliance on the traditional challenge window
Base previously operated under an Optimistic Rollup model, where transactions are assumed valid unless challenged during a dispute period. That design has been widely used across Ethereum scaling systems, but one of its trade-offs is that users moving funds back to the Ethereum mainnet often need to wait through a multi-day challenge window before final settlement.
With the addition of Succinct’s SP1 zkVM and TEE-based approach, Base plans to use zero-knowledge proofs to replace that longer challenge period with cryptographic finality. According to the announcement, this should reduce finality to approximately one day. In practical terms, that means lower trust assumptions for users bridging assets back to Ethereum and a more direct reliance on cryptographic verification.
Not a full shift to ZK Rollup architecture
Importantly, Base has not said it will abandon its current architecture or fully transition into a ZK Rollup. Instead, the integration appears to be a targeted upgrade within its existing framework, combining the operational structure of an optimistic system with stronger proving technology.
The development also highlights a broader trend in Ethereum’s Layer 2 landscape: scaling models are becoming less rigid, with networks increasingly blending ideas from both optimistic and zero-knowledge approaches. For Base, the key change is the introduction of cryptographic finality to improve the security and certainty of withdrawals to the Ethereum mainnet.
