Global banks are intensifying their push to modernize cross-border payments, with blockchain technology taking center stage. On October 3, Spanish financial services giant BBVA announced its participation in a SWIFT-led consortium of over 30 banks to build a shared blockchain ledger for continuous real-time settlement of international payments.
SWIFT’s Blockchain Network: Real-Time, Smart, Secure
The new network will function as a shared, secure digital ledger where banks can record international transactions in real time, sorting and validating them through smart contracts, according to BBVA’s announcement. The infrastructure is designed to enable seamless real-time international payments, transfers, and transactions involving stablecoins and digital assets.
BBVA highlighted the project’s potential to streamline cross-border transactions, making them as efficient and fast as local payments. The initiative expands SWIFT’s traditional role in financial messaging to include tokenized value movement while maintaining compliance, resilience, and interoperability.
BBVA’s Strategic Commitment
As one of Europe’s largest financial groups, BBVA views this move as part of its broader strategy to strengthen digital services and embrace emerging financial technologies. Eva Rubio, Head of Global Transaction Banking at BBVA Corporate & Investment Banking, stated: “SWIFT’s digital ledger initiative is a game-changer for the future of cross-border payments… At BBVA, we are committed to collaborating on this next chapter of financial innovation to deliver the speed, transparency, and resilience that businesses and consumers need in a digital world.”
Stablecoins and Tokenized Assets at the Core
The platform will also support stablecoins and tokenized financial assets (such as digitally represented money, bonds, or deposits), enabling instant, secure, and traceable transfers across blockchain networks. To develop and test these use cases, SWIFT is working with blockchain software firm Consensys.
While industry experts caution that regulatory and operational hurdles remain, advocates argue the initiative could significantly reduce costs, improve transparency, and allow international payments to match the efficiency of domestic transactions. With over 30 major banks already on board, SWIFT’s blockchain-powered real-time payment network is moving from concept toward reality—potentially reshaping the future of global finance.
