On February 26, 2025, BDACS, South Korea's first regulated custodian for institutional digital assets, announced a strategic alliance with blockchain firm Ripple to expand safeguarded custody services for XRP, RLUSD, and related cryptocurrencies. This partnership marks a significant step in the country's methodical approach to institutional digital asset integration, mirroring the evolving policy landscape under the Financial Services Commission (FSC).
Core of the Partnership: Ripple Custody Platform Integration
According to Ripple's official announcement, the agreement introduces Ripple Custody—a platform fortified with institutional-grade protections—into BDACS’s service portfolio. BDACS will leverage this platform to securely steward XRP, Ripple's native digital token, and RLUSD, its USD-pegged stablecoin launched in December 2024. The collaboration also prioritizes nurturing the XRP Ledger (XRPL) developer ecosystem and enhancing stablecoin functionality.
BDACS CEO Harry Ryoo stated that the venture would provide “secure and reliable custody services” to strengthen Ripple’s blockchain projects. He emphasized BDACS’s role as the first regulated institutional custodian in South Korea, tasked with leading compliance-driven innovation in digital asset services.
Regulatory Environment and Market Outlook in South Korea
Fiona Murray, Ripple’s APAC managing director, highlighted the partnership’s alignment with South Korea’s “dynamic crypto sector” and evolving policies permitting corporate involvement in digital assets. The FSC’s 2025 strategy codifies institutional crypto participation, including stablecoin frameworks. Initiatives like Busan’s blockchain innovation zone are poised to further drive adoption.
Established in 2022 and headquartered in Busan, BDACS ranks among the top institutional custody entities in South Korea. The firm recently allied with Woori Bank to refine digital asset solutions. Ripple contributes extensive blockchain expertise, backed by over 60 international regulatory licenses and its 2024 acquisition of Standard Custody & Trust, strengthening its compliance and custody capabilities.
Industry Outlook: Global Crypto Custody Market Could Reach $16 Trillion
The collaboration emerges amid optimistic forecasts for the global crypto custody sector, which could hit $16 trillion by 2030, with tokenized assets potentially representing 10% of worldwide economic output. Observers believe the deal may accelerate institutional adoption of XRPL and RLUSD while cementing South Korea’s status as a regulated digital asset hub.
This synergy highlights South Korea’s growing influence in blockchain evolution: BDACS’s deep understanding of local compliance combined with Ripple’s technological framework is set to attract international capital into the Korean crypto ecosystem.
