BETZ and Bitcoin Have Moved Closely Together
Roundhill Sports Betting & iGaming ETF, trading under the ticker BETZ, has drawn attention for maintaining a 365-day correlation of roughly 0.91 with Bitcoin. Statistically, that implies about 83% of Bitcoin’s price movements can be associated with this sports-betting-focused fund. BETZ tracks companies tied to sports wagering and online gaming, including DraftKings and Flutter Entertainment, making the strength of this relationship notable for both crypto and traditional market participants.
Launched in June 2020, the fund has recorded about $98 million in net inflows, while its current assets under management stand near $50 million. Although it remains relatively small in size, the consistency of its link with Bitcoin has turned it into an interesting reference point for investors watching broader risk appetite across markets.
Shared Sensitivity to Risk-On Conditions
The reported correlation is notable not only for its magnitude, but also for its timing around major market turning points. In some instances, BETZ has moved ahead of Bitcoin, suggesting it may reflect changes in investor sentiment before those shifts appear clearly in crypto prices. One explanation is that both assets respond to similar macro signals, including liquidity conditions, appetite for speculative exposure, and capital flows into higher-volatility trades.
That puts Bitcoin and sports-betting equities in a similar category as risk-oriented assets. When investors are willing to take on more risk, capital may enter both segments. When defensive positioning takes over, both can come under pressure.
Recent Market Action Points to Possible Decoupling
Even so, the relationship may not remain stable. Recent conditions indicate that BETZ’s performance has started to diverge from Bitcoin’s trajectory. If that decoupling continues, the ETF’s usefulness as a leading or predictive signal for Bitcoin could weaken substantially.
For investors, the key takeaway is not just the headline 0.91 correlation, but whether that reading can hold over time. A sustained drop in correlation would reduce BETZ’s value as a proxy for Bitcoin sentiment and price direction. More broadly, the pattern underscores how Bitcoin is increasingly linked to traditional risk assets, while also reminding traders that such relationships can shift as market conditions evolve.
