Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates warned in a new article that the world currently has no plan to respond to the 「social, political, and economic disruption」 that AI could bring.
According to BlockBeats, Gates said AI could become 「the most powerful equalizing tool humanity has ever invented」 or 「the most serious source of unfairness」. He said he has not seen leaders, experts, and communities respond adequately to those challenges.
White-collar jobs are already feeling pressure
Gates argued that AI may replace cognitive work across industries faster than previous technological shifts, leaving displaced workers without enough time to move into newly created jobs. He said white-collar roles in sales, customer support, software engineering, and legal assistance are already being affected. In the future, AI could also take on work tied to loan assessment, data analysis, and patient triage.
Blue-collar work and younger workers could also be hit
He added that as robots become more capable and cheaper, blue-collar jobs will face pressure as well. Younger people, he said, may also enter a labor market with fewer available positions.
Gates warned that once companies use AI and robots to cut costs and lower prices, competitors will be forced to follow, creating a vicious cycle that speeds up the adoption of automation.
Call for national coordination and international governance
On policy, Gates said lawmakers need to rethink employment, education, and social security systems. He also called for national-level coordinating bodies to oversee AI policy across employment, taxation, energy, elections, public health, financial systems, and national security.
He also urged the creation of a new international AI governance body to address cross-border risks. He said its mechanisms could draw on global nuclear verification systems, international aviation regulation, and international agreements designed to protect the ozone layer.
Gates also pointed to possible benefits
Alongside the warning, Gates said AI could help speed up innovation in clean energy, climate governance, agriculture, and disease prevention and treatment.
