Cryptocurrency exchange Binance announced on Thursday its registration as a reporting entity with India's Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU-IND), achieving its 19th global regulatory milestone. The exchange posted on X: "Binance goes live in India. Binance is now registered as a reporting entity with India's Financial Intelligence Unit … Our website and app are now fully available for Indian users."
Compliance Commitment and Market Potential
This registration underscores Binance's dedication to anti-money laundering (AML) standards and its ongoing compliance across all jurisdictions. CEO Richard Teng commented: "Our registration with the FIU-IND marks an important milestone in Binance's journey. Recognizing the vitality and potential of the Indian VDA [virtual digital asset] market, this alignment with Indian regulations allows us to tailor our services to the needs of Indian users. It is a privilege to extend the reach of our cutting-edge platform to this thriving market, supporting India's continued VDA evolution."
Teng added: "Our commitment to stringent regulation forms a fundamental part of our business strategy. It's about fostering a secure, transparent, and efficient environment."
Full Service Launch and Prior Penalties
Indian users now have access to Binance's full suite of services, highlighting the company's strategic expansion into the rapidly growing digital asset market. However, the launch followed a $2.25 million fine from the FIU-IND for non-compliance with AML regulations, and an $87 million goods and services tax (GST) bill issued in August for non-compliance with India's tax regulations. Despite these challenges, Binance pressed forward with its compliance efforts, ultimately securing the registration.
Industry Impact and Outlook
Binance's registration not only provides Indian users with a compliant and convenient trading channel but may also accelerate compliance moves by other international exchanges in India. As India's crypto regulatory framework becomes clearer, the market is expected to see further growth. Teng's remarks suggest Binance will continue investing in compliance and technology to capture the immense potential of the Indian market.
