The Bitcoin community is abuzz with discussions over the potential impact of quantum computing on cryptocurrency security, following the introduction of BIP-360. As highlighted by CoinDesk senior analyst James Van Straten, the proposal aims to upgrade Bitcoin's defenses through a soft fork by introducing the Pay-to-Merkle-Root (P2MR) output type. This development coincides with Bitcoin's recent price rally to $60,000, prompting a reassessment of the network's vulnerability to quantum threats.
Proposal Details and Market Outlook
Van Straten explains that BIP-360 replaces traditional public key hashes with Merkle roots, preemptively hardening the network against quantum attacks before quantum computers become practical. He forecasts that once community consensus is reached, the Bitcoin market could experience a 50-100% price revaluation within weeks, driven by renewed confidence in security upgrades.
Fate of Satoshi's Bitcoin Under Scrutiny
However, the analyst also warns that the proposal may reignite debates about the future of bitcoins held by Satoshi Nakamoto and other long-dormant wallets. Approximately 1 million BTC from Satoshi's early mining remain untouched, with their public keys potentially exposed to quantum risk. Implementing BIP-360 might force these assets to migrate to new addresses, or risk being compromised by quantum decryption, introducing significant market uncertainty.
Related Warnings and Industry Calls
This issue is not isolated. Glassnode data reveals that around 6.04 million BTC have exposed public keys vulnerable to quantum attacks. AmericanFortress previously proposed a soft fork to protect Satoshi's coins, while Citi has repeatedly warned of accelerating quantum computing threats to Bitcoin security. These developments underscore an urgent need for Bitcoin to upgrade before quantum computers become viable.
Currently, BIP-360 remains under community discussion, and its final adoption is uncertain. Yet analysts and industry participants agree that quantum-safe measures are critical to Bitcoin's future, and price dynamics will be closely tied to the pace of this technological evolution.
