The bitcoin ATM industry is heating up as Bitcoin Depot, an Atlanta-based cryptocurrency ATM provider, announced it is set to deploy over 115 new bitcoin ATMs across 24 states in the United States. The expansion is part of the company's ambitious plan to achieve 200% growth in 2021.

Expansion Details: 24 States, Focus on the Southeast

According to the company's announcement, 14 new kiosks will be installed in Alabama, 13 in Minnesota, 12 in Florida, and 12 in California, with the remaining units distributed across other states. This rollout effectively doubles Bitcoin Depot's U.S. presence compared to six months ago. Globally, the company's ATM network has surpassed 2,000 kiosks.

Brandon Mintz, President and CEO of Bitcoin Depot, commented: “Cryptocurrency offers a lot of opportunities for people that don’t have access to traditional financial services, like banks. Our kiosks allow them to essentially self-bank through the digital wallet on their phone by turning their cash into cryptocurrency, which can be used to transfer money, pay bills or invest. We are proud that our continued expansion will bring this option to more people across the world.”

Industry Context: Global Bitcoin ATM Numbers Surge

The surge in Bitcoin Depot's expansion mirrors broader trends in the crypto ATM space. According to data from CoinATMRadar, there were a total of 17,003 cryptocurrency ATMs worldwide across 68 countries as of March 2021. Earlier in 2020, Switzerland saw a rise in hotels hosting bitcoin ATMs, while U.S. operator Libertyx added cash-out functionality to its 5,000 machines, tripling the number of bitcoin ATMs that allow users to cash out their BTC.

Bitcoin Depot’s move is not isolated. Other ATM operators are also racing to deploy more units to capture growing demand from both retail users and investors. Analysts believe that increasing the density of bitcoin ATMs lowers the barrier to entry for cryptocurrency, especially benefiting the unbanked and underbanked populations.

Outlook: 2021 Growth Target Doubling

While Bitcoin Depot has not disclosed further details on specific future locations, the company expects overall business growth of 200% in 2021. This ambitious target reflects strong confidence in the market potential of bitcoin ATMs. As regulatory clarity improves and user education spreads, bitcoin ATMs could become a critical bridge between fiat currency and digital assets.
