Bitcoin has finally broken above last year's low near $80,000, rallying to around $93,300 after briefly hitting $97,000 in early 2026. The nearly 7% year-to-date gain has also lifted other cryptocurrencies, bringing the largest digital asset closer to a resistance level that has capped rallies since November.
Geopolitical Risk as Short-Term Driver
Greg Cipolaro at NYDIG Research identifies political instability in the U.S. as the most significant near-term catalyst. Tensions between Donald Trump and Fed Chair Jerome Powell — who refused to cut rates despite presidential pressure — have drawn comparisons to Richard Nixon's meddling before the 1972 election. "History shows political meddling in monetary policy is almost invariably bad — higher inflation, damaged central bank credibility, and weaker currencies," Cipolaro wrote. Bitcoin, a non-sovereign asset with a fixed supply, may be benefiting from investor concerns over similar risks today.
Market maker Wintermute echoed that geopolitical uncertainties are funneling safe-haven demand into crypto. The structural shift in how capital flows through the market is also one of the three major catalysts identified by analysts.
Macro Support and Supply Overhang Relief
Global money supply has hit an all-time high. Precious metals like gold, silver, platinum, and palladium have surged, while Bitcoin — marketed as "digital gold" — lagged. "Although our analysis indicates gold and bitcoin respond to distinct macro dynamics with effectively zero correlation, both highlight a broader reality: truly non-sovereign stores of value are exceedingly rare at a global scale," Cipolaro said, suggesting Bitcoin may now be catching up.
Tax-loss selling — investors dumping assets at a loss to offset gains — ended with the new year. Additionally, the October 10 BitMEX liquidations, where exchanges unloaded unhedged long positions through auto-deleveraging, have faded as an overhang.
Analysts from NYDIG and Wintermute highlight that the structural evolution of capital flows — improving institutional access, custody solutions, and liquidity depth — marks a key catalyst for 2026. Combined with geopolitical hedging and macro liquidity, Bitcoin could be poised to break out of its current range.
