Bitcoin has closed above the upper Bollinger Band on the daily chart, putting short-term volatility back in focus. The report said this was only the second such event since mid-January. At the close, Bitcoin stood at $80,484, while the upper band was placed at $81,549. TradingView data showed the move arrived as the Bollinger Bands narrowed to their tightest range on record.
Bollinger Bands are a common volatility tool built around a 20-day moving average, with bands plotted two standard deviations above and below that average. A wider gap points to rising volatility. A tighter range suggests compression. When price breaks above the upper band after a squeeze, traders often read it as a sign that a strong directional move may be starting.
A breakout after an extreme squeeze
So-called band squeezes often appear before sharp swings, and in crypto those moves can break either higher or lower. The article said the next few sessions matter, especially heading into the weekend. If Bitcoin can keep trading above the upper band, the move may extend. If it fails to hold, price could slip back into a choppy range inside the bands.
John Bollinger said his investment funds had adjusted their Bitcoin positions and that their technical models had moved into the “positive” zone. The report did not include more detailed figures on those position changes.
Bitcoin is still 36% below its record high
At the time of publication, Bitcoin was still trading above $80,000 and had gained about 9% over the past 30 days. Even so, it remained 36% below its all-time high of $126,000, which the article said was reached in October 2025. That leaves the market below the levels seen during that earlier rally. Data from CryptoAppsy also confirmed that Bitcoin tested the $80,484 level during this period.
The report framed the current setup as a short-term technical test. After a long compression phase, the first push above the upper Bollinger Band has yet to prove it can last. Analysts cited in the piece warned that volatility could increase in the near term, leaving the market focused on whether Bitcoin can defend this threshold over the coming days.
