On October 31, 2018, the Bitcoin.com Store announced a strategic partnership with Egifter, a leading gift card marketplace, to enable customers to purchase over 300 branded gift cards using Bitcoin Cash (BCH). The announcement coincided with the tenth anniversary of the Bitcoin whitepaper, marking a significant step in cryptocurrency usability.
Over 300 Gift Cards for Food, Entertainment, and Retail
The integration brings Egifter’s vast catalog directly into the Bitcoin.com Store interface. Users can navigate to the “Gift Cards” section and choose from categories such as food & restaurants, music, movies, electronics, sports, travel, and more. Notable brands include Best Buy, Applebees, American Eagle, Dunkin Donuts, HBO Now, Macy’s, Nike, Nordstrom, Uber, Panera Bread, and Domino’s. Gift card amounts range from $5 to $2,000 per card, giving users flexible spending options.
Powered by Bitpay for Seamless BCH Payments
At checkout, the Bitcoin.com Store utilizes Bitpay as its payment processor. Customers must use a wallet compatible with the Bitpay Payment Protocol to complete the transaction. After payment, they receive a virtual gift card redeemable immediately at the chosen merchant. Blake Moore, Ecommerce Manager at Bitcoin.com, commented: “Well over 300 cards from the world’s top brands are now available to our valued users which adds a great deal of accessibility.”
Driving Bitcoin Cash Adoption One Step at a Time
This launch builds on the revamped Bitcoin.com Store that debuted in April 2018, which originally offered Bitcoin-themed merchandise, hardware wallets, apparel, and accessories. By adding gift cards, the store further expands the utility of BCH beyond mere speculation. “Providing our visitors with the ability to spend their BCH on gift cards accepted worldwide is just another example of the many steps our site is taking towards spreading Bitcoin Cash adoption,” Moore added.
Since the announcement, customers can combine gift card purchases with other items like T-shirts and hardware wallets in a single checkout. The partnership also highlights the growing trend of cryptocurrency payment processors bridging the gap between digital assets and traditional retail. As Bitcoin Cash continues to position itself as a peer-to-peer electronic cash system, such integrations are crucial for real-world use cases.
