Bitcoin currently relies on ECDSA and Schnorr signatures for security. A quantum computer with approximately 126,000 physical qubits could break these systems using Shor's algorithm. Data from Glassnode shows over 6.04 million BTC have exposed public keys, making them susceptible to a future quantum attack. Although large-scale quantum computers are likely years or decades away, the pace of advancement cannot be ignored.

Political Stalemate: The Migration Consensus

Check highlights that governance issues are more daunting than technical ones. An estimated 6 to 7 million BTC are dormant—coins that have not moved for years, with public keys already on-chain. The straightforward defense would be to migrate all funds to quantum-resistant addresses via a soft fork or widespread coordination. However, Check notes, “There is virtually no political path to achieve consensus, whether freezing old coins or forcing migration.”

Divided Camps: Early Action vs. Wait-and-See

The community is split: one camp advocates immediate protocol upgrades to introduce quantum-safe signatures; the other believes the threat is distant and hasty changes could introduce bugs. Check warns this divide could lead to prolonged paralysis, while the window for action quietly closes. Citigroup has also recently warned that quantum risks are accelerating, adding to market unease.

Path Forward: From Tech to Governance

Some experts propose “official migration windows” or “timelock mechanisms,” but Check sees them as nearly impossible to implement in a decentralized community. Rather than waiting for a perfect solution, he urges a basic consensus on protecting public funds. Block's Spiral team has launched Loupe, an AI vulnerability scanner for Bitcoin, but that only detects existing flaws, not solve the core challenge of political coordination.

Bitcoin's survival in the quantum age depends on whether its community can bridge technical divides and forge political will. Otherwise, quantum computing may become not just an algorithmic problem, but the spark that ends Bitcoin's dream of decentralized governance.
