The film “Bitcoin” has moved into international sales ahead of the Cannes market. Starring Gal Gadot and Casey Affleck, it revisits Craig Wright’s disputed Satoshi Nakamoto claims and brings one of bitcoin’s longest-running controversies into mainstream cinema.

A new film centered on bitcoin’s origin story is moving into the global market. Titled “Bitcoin” and previously referenced in online reports as “Bitcoin: Killing Satoshi,” the project stars Gal Gadot and Casey Affleck and puts the unresolved identity of Satoshi Nakamoto at the center of its pitch.

Ahead of the Cannes market, Patrick Wachsberger’s sales and production company 193 launched international sales for the title. Around the same time, Acme AI & FX, the production company behind the project, confirmed that Doug Liman’s feature had wrapped production. The film has been described as the “first fully-generated, studio-quality AI feature film,” though the report says that label mainly refers to AI-built environments and visuals, while the cast performed in a traditional way and digital settings were added later.

The plot turns Craig Wright’s claims into a thriller

Gal Gadot plays war correspondent Charlotte “Lotte” Miller, who is recruited by blockchain investor Calvin Ayre to write an investigative report on Australian computer scientist Craig Wright. Pete Davidson plays Ayre, Casey Affleck plays Wright, and Isla Fisher is also part of the cast. The screenplay was written by Nick Schenk, with Ryan Kavanaugh and Lawrence Grey producing. Production began at the end of February.

The synopsis frames the movie as “a high-stakes conspiracy thriller that asks the question no one in power wants answered.” A longer description presents the story as one man’s attempt to prove he created bitcoin, a claim that allegedly puts his life at risk and triggers a global controversy involving tech billionaires, world leaders, and the future of the financial system.

A legal defeat still shapes the industry view

Inside the bitcoin sector, the subject is highly contested rather than neutral territory. Craig Wright has spent years claiming he is Satoshi Nakamoto, but developers, researchers, and other industry participants have challenged that assertion on the grounds that no accepted cryptographic proof has been produced. A 2024 U.K. court ruling rejected his claim, giving that skepticism legal weight as well.

In parts of the BTC community, Wright is widely referred to as “Faketoshi.” Critics have argued that his case has already been discredited in legal and technical terms, not left open in any meaningful sense. That helps explain why the movie is likely to split opinion across crypto circles. Some will see it as reopening a matter they consider settled; others may treat it as a fresh examination of motive, influence, and the power behind competing narratives.

Mainstream cinema takes on one of bitcoin’s deepest fault lines

The project’s own promotional framing makes that divide hard to miss. Its synopsis asks: “If Craig Wright didn’t invent Bitcoin, why is a coalition controlling trillions in global wealth spending hundreds of millions and risking everything to destroy him?” That line positions the film as more than a biographical dispute. It turns one of bitcoin’s longest-running arguments into a commercial thriller for a broader audience.

Wachsberger told Deadline that the film is an “exciting and gripping story” set in the mysterious and high-stakes world of crypto. What is clear now is limited but significant: the movie has wrapped production, international sales are underway, and a debate that has divided bitcoin participants for years is being repackaged for mainstream film buyers and viewers.
