Bitcoin derivatives markets are on fire. On March 8, 2024, bitcoin futures open interest hit an all-time high of $32.30 billion, data from 14 major exchanges shows. CME Group topped the list with $10.07 billion in open interest, followed by Binance at approximately $7.21 billion. Bybit and OKX reported $4.88 billion and $3.18 billion, respectively. The top three exchanges all saw increases in open interest over the past 24 hours.

BTC Dominates Crypto Futures Landscape

Bitcoin futures now account for 48.2% of the total $67 billion across the entire crypto futures market. In comparison, Ethereum (ETH) futures posted $13.24 billion in open interest, while Solana (SOL) futures reached about $2.50 billion. The rapid rally saw BTC briefly touch $70,184 at 10:30 a.m. ET on Friday before pulling back, but the recovery was faster than the volatility witnessed on March 5.

Liquidations Surpass $311 Million

As BTC approached the $70K mark, the broader crypto economy saw $311.76 million in liquidations over the past 24 hours. Of this, $152.71 million were long positions and $159.02 million were shorts. BTC shorts alone accounted for $96.89 million in liquidated positions. The high-leverage environment suggests increased risk of cascading liquidations.

The record open interest signals strong market confidence but also raises caution. Traders should monitor funding rates and exchange positioning. What do you think about Friday's derivatives frenzy? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
