Bitcoin's network has never been more secure: on June 8, 2022, the hashrate hit a new all-time high of 292.02 exahash per second (EH/s), just 2.73% shy of the symbolic 300 EH/s threshold. This marks a 6.18% increase from the previous ATH of 275.01 EH/s recorded on May 2, 2022.
Unexpected Difficulty Adjustment
The hashrate surge led to an unusual difficulty adjustment. Just before the retarget, data had suggested a 0.51% decrease. Instead, the network's mining difficulty increased by 1.29%, rising to 30.28 trillion. While this is still below the all-time difficulty high of 31.25 trillion set on May 10, 2022, the direction caught many observers off guard.
The next difficulty retarget is expected around June 21, approximately 1,600 blocks away. Based on current hashrate levels, early models project a further increase of 1.52%, though this estimate will almost certainly fluctuate with real-time hashrate variations over the coming days.
Top Mining Pools Dominating
Over the past 72 hours, Foundry USA has been the leading mining pool with 52.42 EH/s, contributing to 109 blocks out of 475 total. Antpool came second with 35.11 EH/s (73 blocks), and F2pool third at 32 EH/s (67 blocks). Together, these three pools controlled nearly 42% of total network hashrate, highlighting an ongoing trend of consolidation among large-scale miners.
Implications for Security and Energy
The record-breaking hashrate underscores the aggressive deployment of next-generation ASIC miners and access to low-cost electricity in key mining regions. Despite the crypto bear market pressures seen earlier in 2022, long-term investors continue to pour capital into mining infrastructure, betting on Bitcoin's future.
A higher hashrate directly translates to stronger network security, making a 51% attack increasingly cost-prohibitive. However, it also reignites debates about energy consumption and environmental impact. Nonetheless, from a technical standpoint, the network is now more resilient than ever.
