At the same time, the daily hashprice — a common measure of miner earnings per unit of computing power — is sitting at $31.11 per petahash per second (PH/s), underscoring how compressed mining margins have become.
The move below 1 ZH/s comes after a brief recovery above 1,000 exahash per second (EH/s), which is mathematically equivalent to 1 ZH/s. That rebound, however, did not hold. According to the report, Bitcoin’s hashrate is now fluctuating in the 960 EH/s to 970 EH/s range, suggesting that some less profitable machines may no longer be operating under current conditions.
Why the 1 ZH/s Level Matters
The 1 ZH/s level is not a formal protocol boundary, but it serves as a widely watched benchmark for the total computing power securing the Bitcoin network. When hashrate slips below that level, it signals that aggregate mining participation has softened, at least temporarily. In practical terms, a lower hashrate means fewer machines are competing to produce blocks and secure the chain at that moment.
That reduction in computational power has implications for network timing. The report notes that average block intervals have stretched to about 10 minutes and 42 seconds, above Bitcoin’s intended average of one block every 10 minutes. When blocks come in more slowly than expected, the protocol eventually responds through its built-in difficulty adjustment mechanism.

The prospect of a downward adjustment matters because miners have recently faced the opposite environment. They have already gone through two consecutive difficulty increases, including the largest jump since 2021. One of those hikes amounted to a steep 14.73%, followed by another increase of 0.45% on March 5. For an industry operating on narrow margins, those back-to-back increases made profitability even harder to maintain.
Hashprice Remains Weak Despite a Short-Term Improvement
Hashprice is one of the clearest indicators of miner economics because it reflects how much revenue a miner can expect to earn from a given amount of hashpower per day. At $31.11 per PH/s, current returns are still weak by historical standards. The report says that level is approximately 11.64% lower than it was 30 days earlier on February 15, 2026.
There has been a modest rebound from more depressed levels, however. Compared with the $27.56 hashprice recorded on February 24, the current reading is about 12.88% higher. Even so, that improvement has not been enough to change the broader picture. The report characterizes miner margins in 2026 as “paper-thin,” with hashprice lingering below levels seen before 2016.
For many operators, this creates a difficult operating equation. Revenue is being squeezed while the cost side of the business — especially electricity, infrastructure, maintenance, and financing — does not automatically fall in tandem. As a result, less efficient mining fleets are more vulnerable to being switched off when earnings no longer justify keeping machines online.

A miner may still produce bitcoin, but if the revenue generated per unit of hashpower is too low, continued operation can become economically unsustainable. Any Relief May Be Short-Lived
A lower difficulty setting, if confirmed, could provide miners with some breathing room after weeks of tight economics. Fewer computational hurdles would improve the odds of earning block rewards and transaction fees from the same hardware footprint. That said, the report also suggests that any relief may prove temporary.
If mining conditions improve quickly, sidelined hashpower could return to the network. That would increase competition again, potentially pushing hashrate back upward and reducing the benefit of a difficulty cut. In other words, the mining sector may experience a recurring cycle: lower profitability forces some machines offline, the network adjusts, economics improve modestly, and some machines come back online.
This feedback loop is a core feature of Bitcoin’s mining market. It helps the network remain resilient and self-correcting, but it also means that individual operators often face sharp swings in economics over relatively short periods.

The latest figures point to a network that remains functional and highly secure, but one in which miner profitability is under clear pressure. A hashrate in the 960–970 EH/s range is still enormous by any historical benchmark.
