Bitcoin Layer 2 protocol Botanix is shutting down, and the team has set a firm deadline for withdrawals. In a June 10 announcement, Botanix told users to remove their assets by July 9, 2026. Any remaining BTC and other crypto assets left after that date will be cleared and cannot be claimed.
Mainnet launch was followed by a short runway
The network is closing after nearly four years in operation. Botanix said demand for native BTC DeFi stayed weak, and fee revenue no longer covered the economics needed to keep the network running.
Botanix had launched its mainnet in July 2025 with a 5-second block time and an initial federation that included multiple crypto firms. At the time, the project expected federation nodes to exceed 100 in 2026. Instead, the network is ending less than a year after mainnet went live, highlighting how difficult it remains for Bitcoin L2 projects to maintain traction.
Withdrawal deadline and unresolved details
The timetable is clear on one point: users must complete withdrawals by July 9, 2026, inclusive. The scope covers BTC and other crypto assets held on Botanix. After the deadline, leftover balances will be removed.
Botanix has not said whether withdrawals will involve additional gas fees or other on-chain restrictions. Users with assets still on the network may want to act early, especially if a wave of last-minute withdrawals creates congestion close to the cutoff date.
Pressure is building across the Bitcoin L2 segment
Botanix was one of the earlier Bitcoin L2 protocols built with EVM compatibility. Its shutdown suggests that being early does not guarantee durable user retention, and it does not automatically turn into a sustainable fee base.
The source article also points to continued expansion from rivals such as Stacks and BOB, adding to competition for BTC DeFi activity. That puts attention back on the same issues facing the sector: on-chain activity, developer ecosystem depth, and whether the economic model can hold up over time.
