Four years after its initial release, the mobile game 'Bitcoin Miner' — a simulation of the cryptocurrency mining business — has finally added real Bitcoin (BTC) rewards. Developer Fumb Games announced on Thursday a partnership with Hoboken-based fintech firm Zebedee to integrate the Lightning Network-powered payouts directly into the game experience.
From Simulation to Real Rewards
Bitcoin Miner is an idle mobile game available on both Android and iOS. Players build and manage a virtual mining operation, purchasing rigs, upgrading hardware, securing airdrops, and completing tasks to expand their hash rate. What was once a purely fictional economy has now gained real-world value. Whenever a player sees a green satoshi symbol floating above a coin in the game, tapping it yields actual Bitcoin — credited to their game balance via Zebedee's backend.
“We originally released Bitcoin Miner about four years ago, when crypto started taking off. But there was no real appetite for the game, as it wasn’t possible to enable players to earn actual Bitcoin with it at the time,” said Paul West, founder of Fumb Games, in a statement. “With Zebedee, we were able to put real bitcoin into the game, which makes the premise of Bitcoin Miner much more fun, impactful and noteworthy for players.” Zebedee, which raised $11.5 million in a September 2021 funding round led by Lakestar, specializes in embedding Bitcoin payments into gaming and digital experiences.
How Players Earn and Withdraw Bitcoin
To cash out their hard-earned satoshis, players need to use the Zebedee app. In the game, they can select “Cash Out,” enter their ZBD Gamertag, and tap “Redeem” to transfer the BTC into the Zebedee wallet. The entire withdrawal process leverages the Lightning Network for near-instant, low-cost transactions. Within the game, rewards are not limited to idle tapping: players can also earn bitcoin by completing in-game tasks, leveling up mining rigs, investing in infrastructure, and participating in special airdrop events.
The integration transforms the formerly abstract simulation into a genuine on-ramp for Bitcoin, especially for casual gamers who may not have previously interacted with cryptocurrency. By making the rewards tangible, Fumb Games hopes to increase player engagement and retention.
Gaming as a Gateway to Bitcoin Adoption
Simon Cowell, CEO of Zebedee, emphasized the broader mission behind the partnership: “Bitcoin is an amazing technology for human progress. We are passionate for the technology of Bitcoin itself and hope that fun and easily approachable games like Bitcoin Miner will foster curiosity about bitcoin and get more people of all ages and backgrounds learning about it and participating in the new digital economy powered by Bitcoin.”
The integration of real Bitcoin rewards into mobile games is gaining traction as a method to drive mass adoption. By allowing players to earn small amounts of BTC while playing, developers can lower the barrier to entry and educate users in an entertaining context. Fumb Games and Zebedee's collaboration could serve as a blueprint for other mobile game developers looking to incorporate cryptocurrency rewards.
Bitcoin Miner is available now for free download on both the App Store and Google Play.
