Bitcoin mining firm MARA has acquired 1,000 BTC (~$66.7 million) via the institutional brokerage platform FalconX. Blockchain analytics firm Lookonchain flagged the transaction, noting it signals a strategic pivot after months of heavy Bitcoin selling in the first quarter.
MARA Buys 1,000 BTC Through FalconX
Lookonchain data show MARA sold 20,880 BTC in Q1 2026 at an average price of $70,137, generating roughly $1.5 billion. The company had revised its digital asset policy early this year, giving management authority to sell Bitcoin already held on its balance sheet — previously, only newly mined coins could be sold. This change enabled MARA to pursue larger treasury adjustments.
In February, MARA transferred 1,318 BTC (worth ~$87 million) to custodians and liquidity providers including BitGo, Galaxy Digital, and Two Prime. Selling intensified in March, with 15,133 BTC sold between March 4 and 25, netting about $1.1 billion. Proceeds were used to repurchase outstanding convertible senior notes due in 2030 and 2031. CEO Fred Thiel said the moves aimed to strengthen the balance sheet and limit shareholder dilution, resulting in roughly $88.1 million in cash savings before transaction costs.
MARA Reverses Course Amid Miner Sell-Off Record
Publicly listed Bitcoin miners collectively sold more than 32,000 BTC in Q1 2026, a quarterly record. MARA's earlier sales aligned with that trend, but its latest purchase breaks from the distribution pattern. The company now appears confident in Bitcoin's long-term role within its corporate treasury strategy, even after aggressively deleveraging.
The source of the buyback capital? MARA had ample cash from Q1 sales after completing note repurchases. FalconX serves as a major institutional prime broker for crypto trading and credit. As of press time, MARA has not issued an official statement about the acquisition. On-chain data confirms the 1,000 BTC have been moved to a wallet associated with the company. In an environment where most miners are still selling, MARA's accumulation sends a rare bullish signal.
