Bitcoin's move back toward $91,000 has put two CME futures gaps back on traders' radar, with one near $90,600 and another around $88,000.

Bitcoin’s drop back to just above $91,000 has brought renewed attention to unfilled gaps in CME bitcoin futures. According to the report, one weekend gap sits near $90,600, while CME bitcoin futures were trading around $91,900 at press time.

From that level, the market would need to fall roughly 1.6% to revisit the weekend gap. A deeper move would put the New Year’s Day gap near $88,000 back in focus, which would require about another 4% decline from current futures prices.

Why CME gaps keep drawing trader attention

CME bitcoin futures are cash-settled contracts built to track the price of bitcoin, but they do not trade around the clock like spot markets. Trading pauses for an hour each day and stops over the weekend. If bitcoin moves sharply during those closed periods, a price gap can appear once the market reopens.

The latest gap formed after CME bitcoin futures closed on Friday near $90,600 and reopened on Sunday evening around $91,600. That untraded range is what market participants refer to as a gap.

Gap-filling remains a familiar market pattern

Traders monitor these levels because bitcoin has often retraced and traded back through CME gaps in the past, a move commonly called “filling the gap.” It is not a fixed rule. Still, the pattern has shown up often enough to become a widely followed technical theme.

The report noted that many of these retracements happen within days, often during the first week after a gap forms, though some stay open for longer. It compared the behavior to the max pain theory in options markets, where heavily watched technical reference points can influence positioning and short-term price action.

IBIT is showing a similar setup

A comparable pattern is also emerging in BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, or IBIT. The ETF closed Tuesday at $52.45, with open gaps around $48 and $50.

That may signal that ETF trading behavior is starting to resemble futures-based technical patterns more closely. As IBIT becomes more embedded in bitcoin market structure and gains influence alongside CME futures, those ETF gaps may turn into another reference point for traders.
