Bitcoin reclaimed the $80,000 level on July 22 for the first time since January 31, propelled by a single-day spot purchase of approximately $120 million. The move reversed four consecutive sessions of net selling pressure and caught short sellers off guard.
Spot Buying and Short Squeeze
Liquidations totaled $163 million across the past 24 hours as the rally gained momentum above a level that had acted as a ceiling throughout much of the first quarter. Analysts attribute the breakout to spot investor accumulation rather than leveraged speculation. The $120 million daily inflow marked the first net purchase day of the month after weeks of selling dominance.
Geopolitical Detente Drives Capital Back
Over the weekend, macro conditions shifted. President Trump announced on Truth Social what he called "Project Freedom," a U.S.-led effort to escort neutral vessels out of the Strait of Hormuz. "We have told these Countries that we will guide their Ships safely out of these restricted Waterways, so that they can freely and ably get on with their business," Trump wrote, adding that the initiative would begin Monday morning Middle East time. He also noted that representatives were having "very positive discussions" with Iran that could lead to "something very positive for all." The move followed an April 22 ceasefire agreement, but until now, war tensions around the Strait had pinned Bitcoin below $80,000 since early February. Trump framed the operation as a humanitarian gesture but warned that interference would be "dealt with forcefully."
ETF Inflows Extend Five-Week Streak
Institutional flows reinforced the bullish signal. Spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded $629 million in net inflows on Friday, the second-largest single-day inflow of 2026 and the fourth-largest purchase of the year. The figure extended five consecutive weeks of net inflows, suggesting demand at current levels is structural rather than speculative. Sustained buying from institutional investors will be crucial for holding the $80,000 threshold.
Overbought Technical Signals Flash Caution
Technical indicators offer a more cautious outlook. Bitcoin has entered overbought territory on the Bollinger Bands, a condition historically preceding buyer exhaustion and short-term pullbacks. The Accumulation/Distribution indicator, rather than trending upward with price, has remained range-bound and actually declined in the past 24 hours, with a current reading of approximately 174,000 Bitcoin in volume. Until that volume figure rises with conviction, the foundation for a sustained rally above $80,000 remains thin.
