Last week, Bitcoin (BTC) experienced a volatile ride after hitting a new all-time high on May 22. The digital asset has since retreated, dropping from $109,000 to around $104,500, a decline of approximately 4.13%. Concurrently, the Crypto Fear and Greed Index (CFGI), maintained by alternative.me, plummeted from the "extreme greed" zone to the "neutral" level, touching 50 points on May 31.

Sharp Shift in Sentiment

The CFGI categorizes market sentiment into five bands: 0-24 extreme fear, 25-49 fear, 50 neutral, 51-74 greed, and 75-100 extreme greed. When Bitcoin hit its all-time high (with some exchanges briefly recording $112,000), the index entered the "extreme greed" region, but soon retreated sharply.

For historical perspective, on November 22, 2024, when BTC was trading at about $98,997, the CFGI stood at 94. In the current cycle, sentiment shifted from greed to neutral within just a few days after the peak. Notably, on Friday May 30, the index was still at 60 (greed), but by Saturday it had fallen to exactly 50, illustrating the rapid change in market mood.

Market Implications

Despite the sentiment drop to neutral, Bitcoin remains above $104,500, still about 5.56% higher than its price in November 2024. This suggests resilience after the post-ATH pullback. However, a neutral reading implies a lack of clear directional bias, with bulls and bears in balance, potentially foreshadowing a consolidation phase.

Analysts view the rapid decline from extreme greed to neutral as a sign of heightened uncertainty during the price discovery process. Short-term volatility may persist as the market awaits new catalysts. A further decline could push the index into "fear" territory, while positive news might reignite greed-oriented sentiment.
