On December 17, 2020, Bitcoin (BTC) surged to an all-time high of $23,777, marking another milestone in the cryptocurrency market. The total market capitalization of all digital assets exceeded $640 billion, with Bitcoin alone accounting for $429 billion, or 65% of the total. Ethereum (ETH) rose 7% to $663, while XRP and Litecoin (LTC) both gained over 19%, and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) traded at $323.

Market Rally Sparks Bubble vs. Belief Debate

The rapid price increase has ignited a fierce debate between skeptics and believers. Canadian economist David Rosenberg called Bitcoin a “massive bubble,” questioning the uncertainty of its future supply curve compared to gold. “We don’t know the future supply curve of BTC,” he said.

However, Paolo Ardoino, CTO of Bitfinex, countered that Bitcoin's breakout above $20,000 is not just about speculation but represents a monumental technological shift. “Critics should take heed of the quiet dedication of those building layers upon this technology that will change the very nature of money,” he stated.

Onchain Analyst: $100K Target is 'Ridiculously Low'

Prominent onchain analyst Willy Woo told his 176,000 Twitter followers that the $100,000 price target is “ridiculously low” based on current trajectory. He pointed out that the next landmark is $55,000, which would make Bitcoin a $1 trillion macro asset. Woo’s bullish outlook resonated with many Bitcoin maximalists.

Nick Jones, founder and CEO of UK-based crypto wallet Zumo, added that everyday investors are turning to Bitcoin as a safe bet amid government money printing. “If the pound is devaluing, cryptocurrency looks like a safer bet,” he said.

Gold Bug Peter Schiff Pours Cold Water

Famous gold advocate Peter Schiff took to Twitter to criticize MicroStrategy’s potential $650 million Bitcoin purchase, claiming the company would buy from whales in private transactions rather than on the open market, leaving retail investors as exit liquidity. However, after his tweet, Bitcoin’s price jumped another $3,000, adding to his frustration.

Institutional and Retail Demand Drive Rally

The rally is fueled by both institutional buying—such as MicroStrategy’s continued accumulation—and retail investors seeking a hedge against fiat currency devaluation. At press time, Bitcoin was trading at $23,107, up 11% in 24 hours. Many analysts believe the path to $100,000 is now clear, with the crypto market entering a new phase of adoption.
