Key Features of Taproot

Taproot introduces several critical improvements to the Bitcoin protocol: Schnorr signatures, the Merklized Alternative Script Tree (MAST), and a new scripting language called Tapscript. Schnorr signatures provide three major benefits as outlined in the Bitcoin Improvement Proposal (BIP) 340: provable security (strong unforgeability under chosen message attack), non-malleability (preventing transaction ID malleability), and linearity (enabling efficient key aggregation for multi-signature schemes). This key aggregation technique is the foundation for higher-level constructions that improve both privacy and efficiency.

By combining Schnorr with MAST, Taproot allows complex smart contract conditions to be expressed as a single output on-chain, making them indistinguishable from simple payments. This greatly enhances privacy and reduces transaction costs. Furthermore, Taproot enables scalable multi-signature setups that can involve over one million participants in a federated multisig arrangement — a dramatic leap from the practical limit of around 15 signers under the older P2SH standard.

Community Reactions

The activation was met with widespread enthusiasm across social media. Anthony Pompliano, a well-known Bitcoin investor, tweeted: “The Taproot upgrade for Bitcoin has officially [been] activated. Congratulations and thank you to every developer, miner, and Bitcoiner who made this happen.” Another user under the handle ‘Hashoveride’ wrote: “Taproot activated! Bitcoin upgraded! Bitcoin Core developer Pieter Wuille, who contributed significantly to the Taproot codebase, commented: “At long last, BIP341/342 (“taproot”) are active on Bitcoin mainnet. Thanks to everyone involved for getting us this far. The real work will be in building wallets/protocols that build on top of it to make use of its advantages. I’m very excited to see where that takes us.”

Shortly after activation, developers began spotting Taproot script-spends in the wild. Alekos Filini reported that a modified version of the Bitcoin Dev Kit (BDK) created a transaction that performed a Taproot script-spend with a 1-of-2 multisig using the new OP_CHECKSIGADD opcode. He noted that it appeared to be the first ever use of that opcode on the Bitcoin network. The blockchain analysis tool oxt.me also shared a Taproot usage chart, confirming that Taproot-based transactions were already being included in blocks.

Lyle Pratt, a Bitcoin enthusiast, outlined three reasons for his excitement: “1) the upgrade process gave us a good recipe for future upgrades; 2) taproot will help proliferate new DLCs services and use cases, eventually bringing them to Lightning; 3) 1 mil+ participant multisig federations are now possible.” He elaborated that federated multisig with many participants was previously impractical due to script size limitations, but Taproot makes it feasible.

Looking Ahead

Taproot is expected to unlock a new wave of innovation on Bitcoin, including more private and efficient smart contracts, improved Lightning Network integrations, and advanced Discreet Log Contracts (DLCs). The upgrade also sets a precedent for future protocol improvements, demonstrating that Bitcoin can evolve through deliberate, non-contentious consensus-building. As wallets and services begin supporting Taproot addresses (bech32m), the ecosystem will gradually realize the full potential of this milestone upgrade.
