Sharp price swings in Bitcoin during the first quarter of 2026 proved challenging for many investors, but for the DeFi protocol Yield Basis, built on Curve Finance infrastructure, volatility became a lucrative revenue stream. The protocol reported $1.1 billion in trading volume and over $12 million in fees during Q1, showcasing how market turbulence can be transformed into yield for liquidity providers.
Surge in Trading Volume and Fees Amid Market Turbulence
Yield Basis captures trading activity during periods of price movement, allowing liquidity providers to earn fees while maintaining exposure to assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Unlike many DeFi platforms that rely on token incentives, Yield Basis generates returns directly from trading flows. By the end of March, the platform held approximately $180 million in total value locked (TVL) across its markets. Notably, it hosts one of the largest BTC-denominated liquidity pools on Curve, with the underlying cbBTC–crvUSD pool holding roughly $174 million in liquidity—including user deposits and capital recycled within the protocol’s automated re-leverage strategy.
Activity peaked during heightened volatility. In the two weeks following January 28, when BTC experienced a sharp downturn followed by rapid rebounds, the protocol processed around $436 million in volume, generating approximately $6 million in trading fees. The broader quarter followed a similar pattern, with roughly $1.2 million distributed to token holders in February alone. As prices moved sharply, traders repositioned, driving higher volumes and increasing fee generation.
Eliminating Impermanent Loss for Organic Yields
Michael Egorov, founder of both Curve Finance and Yield Basis, emphasized that the protocol addresses a structural gap in decentralized finance. “Yield Basis was created to solve the core inefficiency in DeFi that Bitcoin could not generate sustainable yield, because impermanent loss (IL) made liquidity provision inefficient,” Egorov stated. By eliminating IL, Yield Basis creates a model where liquidity providers can earn organic yield from trading activity. The model directly tackles a long-standing issue in automated market makers, offsetting the risk of impermanent loss with higher fee income from volatility-driven trading.
User Adoption and Infrastructure Expansion
User participation rose alongside activity. The amount of YB tokens locked in the protocol increased from 53 million to 89 million during Q1, signaling growing demand to capture fee-based returns. Meanwhile, the platform expanded its infrastructure with a recently launched Hybrid Vault, designed to link liquidity provision with demand for crvUSD. In its first week, the vault attracted $4.54 million in deposits, including nearly $2 million in the stablecoin. This expansion points to Yield Basis’s efforts to support further growth and diversify yield sources.
The results highlight a broader shift in decentralized finance: as markets mature, protocols are increasingly exploring ways to generate sustainable revenue beyond token issuance. Yield Basis’s performance demonstrates that volatility itself can be a powerful engine for yield in the DeFi ecosystem, offering a replicable model for monetizing market turbulence.
