A cryptocurrency whale has closed a leveraged long Bitcoin position, locking in a $14.02 million loss after an aggressive borrowing strategy unraveled. The trader had built exposure through a revolving loan structure, using collateralized WBTC to borrow USDC and then buying additional WBTC, effectively increasing upside exposure while also amplifying downside risk.

Leveraged accumulation through revolving loans

According to the report, the whale accumulated a total of 742.8 WBTC at an average acquisition cost of roughly $89,137 per coin. This type of strategy is commonly used in decentralized finance to magnify market exposure: an investor posts Bitcoin-backed collateral, borrows stablecoins against it, and uses those proceeds to buy more Bitcoin-linked assets.

While the setup can boost returns in a rising market, it becomes far more dangerous when prices decline, as losses are multiplied and the borrower may be forced to deleverage.

Sold entire position at $70,266

The position was reportedly unwound about an hour before the report was published. The whale sold all 742.8 WBTC via FalconX at $70,266 each. After the sale, the trader repaid $29.75 million in USDC to settle the outstanding loan on Aave.

Based on the difference between the average entry cost and the exit price, the transaction resulted in a total realized loss of $14.02 million. The move highlights how quickly leveraged Bitcoin exposure can deteriorate when price momentum turns against a trader.

Risk management back in focus

Large whale transactions are often watched closely as indicators of positioning and market sentiment. Even so, a single liquidation or exit does not necessarily define the broader market trend. What it does show is the vulnerability of highly leveraged strategies, especially those built on recursive borrowing.

The case serves as another reminder that capital efficiency in crypto lending markets comes with concentrated risk. For traders using WBTC as collateral and USDC as borrowed liquidity, collateral ratios, liquidity access, and timing remain critical to survival during volatile Bitcoin swings.
