BitcoinOS has announced the successful execution of the first-ever bridgeless cross-chain transfer of bitcoin on mainnet, moving 1 BTC from the Bitcoin network to Cardano and back without relying on traditional custodial bridges. The demonstration, conducted on May 5, 2025, utilizes zero-knowledge proofs to wrap native BTC into a programmable token, xBTC, and transfer it seamlessly between the two blockchains.
Technical Breakthrough: Zero-Knowledge Proofs Enable Trustless Movement
The process revolves around BitcoinOS's BitSNARK zero-knowledge proof system, which wraps 1 BTC into xBTC on the Bitcoin network. This wrapped token is then moved to a Cardano wallet provided by Sundial Protocol, transferred to the Handle identity platform's wallet, and finally returned to Bitcoin where it is unwrapped back to native BTC. No third-party escrow or cross-chain bridge is used at any stage, reducing custodial risk and latency.
Edan Yago, a core contributor to BitcoinOS, stated that the demonstration proves Bitcoin can gain smart contract capabilities while remaining trustlessly anchored to its own blockchain. The technique effectively turns “Cardano into a seamless DeFi layer for Bitcoin,” he added, highlighting implications for other UTXO-based chains.
Ecosystem Collaboration: Sundial Protocol and Handle
BitcoinOS partnered with Sundial Protocol, a hybrid Bitcoin-Cardano Layer 2 solution, and Handle, Cardano’s identity platform, to execute the transfer. Sheldon Hunt, founder of Sundial Protocol, called the achievement a turning point for decentralized interoperability, while Jonah Peralta of Handle emphasized that the breakthrough unlocks smart contracts and scalability for Bitcoin while preserving its security model.
Industry Impact: Eliminating Bridge Risk and Liquidity Fragmentation
Traditional cross-chain bridges often rely on multi-signature schemes or custodial intermediaries, leading to frequent hacks (e.g., Wormhole and Ronin bridge attacks in 2022). BitcoinOS's bridgeless approach embeds programmable logic directly into Bitcoin transactions via zero-knowledge proofs, enabling Layer 2 solutions to inherit full Bitcoin security without trust assumptions.
This innovation allows BTC to participate in decentralized finance across ecosystems without converting to alternate native tokens, addressing the long-standing problems of custodial risk and fragmented liquidity. BitcoinOS has open-sourced its BitSNARK library and plans to support additional UTXO chains such as Dogecoin and Litecoin in the coming months, further expanding Bitcoin's role as a DeFi base layer.
