Facing $46M quarterly losses, top miner Bitfarms pivots from Bitcoin to AI HPC, raising $888M to build data centers for Nvidia's next-gen Vera Rubin GPUs. Can the gamble pay off?

After reporting a staggering $46 million loss in Q3 2025, Bitfarms — one of the largest publicly listed Bitcoin miners — has decided to abandon its original business altogether and pivot to High Performance Computing (HPC) services for artificial intelligence companies. The firm aims to complete the transformation by Q4 2026, aligning its infrastructure rollout with Nvidia's next-generation AI GPU platform, Vera Rubin.

From Bitcoin to HPC: A Financial Necessity

The dire financial results forced Bitfarms to seek new revenue streams. The company secured $588 million through a convertible note offering and an additional $300 million debt facility, creating a war chest of $888 million to retrofit its mining facilities for AI workloads. To sharpen its North American focus, Bitfarms sold its last Latin American site in Paraguay for $30 million, exiting the region entirely. CEO Ben Gagnon stated that the pivot will allow the company to capture a share of the booming AI data center market, which demands massive computing power and advanced cooling solutions.

The Vera Rubin Bet: Why Skip Blackwell?

While most competitors are adapting existing sites for Nvidia's current Blackwell GPU generation (1.4 kW TDP), Bitfarms is betting exclusively on Vera Rubin, which has a thermal design power of 2.3 kW per GPU — a thermal envelope that most current data centers cannot handle. Gagnon believes this creates a window of opportunity: “A lot of infrastructure being built right now will not be compatible with the next generation. Companies allocating money into Vera Rubin GPUs will be economically incentivized to deploy them fast.” Bitfarms plans to have its Washington site ready as one of the first purpose-built Vera Rubin data centers, potentially generating higher net operating income than its entire Bitcoin mining history.

Risks and Rewards: A High-Stakes Strategy

The gamble is immense. Delays in Vera Rubin production, shifts in AI demand, or competition from big cloud providers could derail the plan. However, if successful, Bitfarms could transform from a struggling miner into a premier provider of cutting-edge AI infrastructure. Gagnon remains bullish: “Would you rather sit on your GPUs and not deploy them, or pay a higher infrastructure expense to start monetizing the asset?” The crypto and AI communities will be watching closely to see if this Vera Rubin gambit pays off.
