Bitfarms, one of the largest publicly listed Bitcoin mining companies in the U.S., has officially abandoned its mining roots to become a pure-play provider of high-performance computing (HPC) services for artificial intelligence firms. The drastic pivot follows a disastrous third quarter in 2025, during which the company reported losses of $46 million.

From Bitcoin Mining to AI Data Centers

CEO Ben Gagnon outlined the transition timeline during the Q3 2025 earnings call, stating that the company expects to complete the pivot by Q4 2026—the same period when Nvidia's next-generation AI GPU, codenamed Vera Rubin, is scheduled to begin shipping. To finance the transformation, Bitfarms has secured $588 million through a convertible note offering and a $300 million debt facility, bringing total funding to over $888 million.

In addition, the company recently sold its last Latin American mining site in Paraguay for $30 million, exiting the region entirely to focus on a fully North American energy footprint. Gagnon believes that North American markets offer higher demand for AI workloads and better access to potential clients.

The Vera Rubin Gambit: Betting on Next-Gen GPUs

Unlike competitors that are retrofitting their facilities for Nvidia's current Blackwell architecture (with a thermal design power of 1.4 kW per GPU), Bitfarms has placed its full bet on the more power-hungry Vera Rubin chips, which have a TDP of up to 2.3 kW. Gagnon argued that much of the infrastructure currently being built for Blackwell will be incompatible with Vera Rubin, creating an opportunity for the first mover.

“A lot of the infrastructure that's being built right now is not going to be compatible with the next generation,” Gagnon said. “And as companies allocate all this money into those Vera Rubin GPUs, they're going to be very economically incentivized to deploy them.” He added, “Would you rather sit on your GPUs and not deploy them? Or would you rather pay a higher infrastructure expense in order to deploy them and start monetizing the asset?”

Bitfarms' Washington state site has been designated as the primary location for the initial Vera Rubin deployment. Gagnon claimed that this facility could “potentially produce more net operating income than we have ever generated with Bitcoin mining, providing the company with a strong cash-flow foundation.”

Risks and Outlook

The move is not without risks. Relying heavily on Nvidia's chip roadmap exposes Bitfarms to potential delays or technical issues with Vera Rubin. Moreover, the Bitcoin mining industry has shown signs of recovery, and abandoning the sector entirely could mean missing out on future price appreciation. Analysts are divided: some see the focus on next-gen infrastructure as a brilliant strategic move, while others warn that the company is putting all its eggs in one basket.

Ultimately, Bitfarms' success will depend on whether its Washington facility can pass Nvidia's certification in time and whether AI companies will indeed pay premium rates for early deployment of Vera Rubin GPUs. The clock is ticking, and the market will soon find out if Gagnon's gamble pays off.
