Bitfinex says Bitcoin has reclaimed a key onchain cost basis, but a decisive break above $80,000 is still needed to confirm a durable bullish trend as ETF inflows and corporate buying face profit-taking pressure.

Bitcoin has climbed back above an important onchain cost threshold, but Bitfinex analysts argue that the market still faces its defining near-term test: whether buyers can push decisively through the $80,000 resistance zone. Until that happens, the exchange’s research team sees the current move as a fragile recovery rather than confirmation of a durable bullish regime.

A Key Recovery, but Not Yet a Breakout

In its latest market report, Bitfinex said bitcoin recently moved back above the so-called True Market Mean near $78,300 for the first time since mid-January. The analysts described this shift as a transition away from “deep bearish conditions” and toward a more neutral market structure. Even so, the report stops short of declaring a sustained uptrend, arguing that the market remains trapped beneath a resistance zone that has capped price action throughout the year.

That ceiling, according to Bitfinex, sits at approximately $80,000. The research note frames this area as the point where a consolidation phase could either resolve into a stronger bullish trend or fail under mounting sell pressure. In other words, regaining an important cost basis is meaningful, but it is not enough on its own to confirm a lasting trend reversal.

Institutional Demand Is Supporting Price

Bitfinex credits a significant portion of bitcoin’s recent resilience to institutional buying. The report highlights $2.1 billion in spot bitcoin ETF inflows over eight consecutive sessions, alongside continued corporate accumulation led by Strategy. Those flows have helped absorb supply and support market bids, giving bitcoin enough strength to reclaim lost ground.

Still, the analysts caution that these inflows should not automatically be interpreted as a signal of imminent upside expansion. Their assessment is that institutional buying has so far acted more as a stabilizing force than as a catalyst for a clean breakout. Instead of producing an explosive move higher, demand has largely been meeting available supply in a market still marked by active distribution.

Short-Term Holders Are Selling Into Strength

A major source of that supply comes from short-term holders who accumulated bitcoin in the $60,000 to $70,000 range. As prices move closer to $80,000, many of those holders are reaching breakeven or profit-taking levels. Bitfinex says this behavior is creating a visible wall of sell-side pressure, limiting bitcoin’s ability to convert higher prices into a sustained breakout.

The implication is straightforward: the market is not lacking demand, but it is also not free from overhead supply. Buyers are stepping in, yet sellers are using strength to exit positions. That tug-of-war is one reason why the report’s near-term base case remains consolidation, with the possibility of a pullback toward $75,000 if resistance continues to hold.

Derivatives Markets Signal Caution

Bitfinex also points to derivatives data as evidence that traders are not aggressively positioning for a sharp upside move. According to the report, implied volatility has continued to compress across the curve even as bitcoin trended higher. Under more decisively bullish conditions, rising prices are often accompanied by increasing volatility expectations as traders anticipate a larger directional move. Here, the opposite dynamic is taking place.

The analysts summarize the current setup as “absorption rather than expansion”. In practical terms, this means robust inflows are being met by equally robust exits. Instead of a market in breakout mode, Bitfinex sees one in which capital inflows are being used to absorb profit-taking and overhead distribution. That distinction matters because it suggests the recent price recovery remains structurally incomplete.

Macro Backdrop Still Supports Hard Assets

Beyond price action, Bitfinex places bitcoin’s setup within a broader macroeconomic context. The report argues that U.S. consumer conditions are shifting into what it calls a “squeeze economy”, where spending is increasingly supported by credit expansion and drawdowns in savings rather than by healthy wage growth. At the same time, inflation expectations have repriced higher while real wage gains have failed to keep pace.

This combination creates a difficult policy environment for the Federal Reserve. According to Bitfinex, the central bank must navigate weakening real demand without ignoring rising inflation expectations. That tension limits the Fed’s flexibility to ease policy aggressively and reinforces what the analysts describe as a stagflationary backdrop. In such an environment, hard assets such as bitcoin may continue to benefit from strategic demand even if short-term trading conditions remain choppy.

Regulation Is Pulling Digital Assets Deeper Into Finance

The report also looks beyond markets to evolving regulatory frameworks. In the United Kingdom, Bitfinex notes ongoing efforts to integrate stablecoins and tokenized deposits into a unified payments framework. The exchange interprets this as a sign that digital assets are increasingly being treated as an extension of existing financial infrastructure rather than as a parallel system operating outside it. Expanded oversight from the Financial Conduct Authority, the report suggests, could reduce institutional frictions that have slowed broader participation.

Another notable point in the report concerns Tether, which froze a record $344 million in USDt in coordination with U.S. authorities. Bitfinex treats this as evidence that centralized issuers can directly embed compliance and enforcement into blockchain-based financial rails. In the firm’s view, stablecoins are no longer just digital payment tools; they are becoming programmable instruments that can align closely with regulatory and legal frameworks.

Russia’s newly approved legislative framework also appears in the analysis. The law recognizes digital assets as property while banning their domestic use as payment, yet it allows an exception for cross-border settlements. Bitfinex sees this as a targeted deployment of blockchain infrastructure for geopolitical and settlement purposes, particularly in contexts shaped by sanctions and constraints in traditional payment networks.

What Comes Next for Bitcoin

Taken together, the report paints a market that is better supported than it was earlier in the year, but still far from an unambiguous breakout. Bitcoin has recovered a key onchain threshold, ETF demand remains strong, and corporate buyers continue to provide support. Yet short-term holder selling, compressed volatility, and a heavy resistance zone near $80,000 continue to define the market’s immediate structure.

For Bitfinex, the message is clear: a decisive close above $80,000 is still required to confirm a more durable bullish regime. Until then, bitcoin remains in a consolidation zone where strong inflows may keep the market supported, but not necessarily free it from the supply that has repeatedly capped rallies. More broadly, the firm concludes that digital assets are being absorbed into existing economic, regulatory, and geopolitical systems, a development that will increasingly shape how prices, policy, and institutional behavior interact in the months ahead.
