BitGo has created a new research and innovation unit, BitGo Labs, to design, launch and test what it described as the next breakthrough applications in digital assets. The company said the group will focus on use cases that can only be enabled by crypto, including interest and yield structures that traditional systems cannot offer, while using AI to shorten development timelines from years to months. At launch, the unit is concentrating on the intersection of AI and crypto. BitGo said the AI economy still needs crypto-native financial infrastructure for micropayments, instant settlement and asset security. Among the first projects introduced by BitGo Labs is Gokubu, a consumer-facing application that uses AI-driven card optimization to manage spending. The product is already live and assigns users personalized AI financial assistants aimed at improving rewards and transaction value. BitGo also said the lab plans to release research papers, protocol prototypes and reference implementations, and to work with developers, academics and institutions across the crypto and AI communities. The announcement comes after BitGo CEO Mike Belshe said in an earlier interview that AI agents are likely to use stablecoins as their native currency, and that human control over AI may last longer than some expect. His remarks responded to Maelstrom CIO Arthur Hayes, who had argued that stablecoins and other digital currencies cannot serve as native money for AI agents because they cannot be directly converted into compute.

BitGo said it has launched BitGo Labs, a new research and innovation division created to design, launch and validate what it called the next breakthrough applications in digital assets.

The company said the unit will focus on use cases that only crypto can enable, including interest and yield that traditional systems cannot provide. It also said AI will be used to build products in months rather than years. The initial focus for BitGo Labs is the intersection of AI and crypto.

BitGo ties the effort to infrastructure needs in the AI economy

According to BitGo, the AI economy still requires crypto financial infrastructure to handle micropayments, enable instant settlement and keep assets secure.

BitGo Labs launched with several related projects already in place. One of them is Gokubu, a consumer application that uses AI-powered card optimization to improve how users spend. The product is already live and can assign users personalized AI financial assistants designed to help them secure better rewards and transaction value.

Research reports, protocol prototypes and reference implementations are planned

Beyond the first batch of projects, BitGo said BitGo Labs will publish research reports, protocol prototypes and reference implementations. The company also said the division will work with developers, academics and institutions across the crypto and AI communities.

Mike Belshe previously commented on AI agents and stablecoins

BitGo CEO Mike Belshe said in an earlier interview that AI agents are likely to use stablecoins as their native currency, and that humans may retain control over AI for longer than some people predict.

Those comments were a response to a view expressed by Maelstrom Chief Investment Officer Arthur Hayes. Hayes had argued that stablecoins and other digital currencies cannot function as the native currency of AI agents because they cannot be directly converted into compute.
