Bitgo rolled out a new AI-ready gateway on Monday, giving developers a faster way to build on its crypto infrastructure without digging through documentation the old-fashioned way. The company launched a Model Context Protocol (MCP) Server that plugs its institutional platform directly into AI-driven development environments.
Natural-Language Queries and Code Generation
The MCP Server connects AI tools to Bitgo's Developer Portal, enabling natural-language interaction with technical documentation. Developers can ask how to create a wallet or access staking endpoints and receive answers pulled from official Bitgo docs. The system retrieves full pages, generates code snippets, and explains API functionality on demand. Supported platforms include ChatGPT, Claude, Cursor, Jetbrains IDEs, Visual Studio Code, and Windsurf. Setup requires adding a single endpoint to an MCP-compatible client, cutting what used to be a multi-tab scavenger hunt down to seconds.
Safety Boundaries: No Onchain Execution
Bitgo stressed that the current version is limited to documentation access and contextual support. It does not execute transactions, manage custody, or perform onchain operations through AI agents. While the industry flirts with fully autonomous crypto agents, Bitgo keeps this first iteration firmly in the "read and assist" lane rather than "act and transact."
CEO Mike Belshe: Just the First Step
CEO Mike Belshe framed the launch as an early step toward broader automation. "AI is changing how developers build, navigate technical systems, and interact with infrastructure," he said. "Developers can now treat Bitgo as agentic infrastructure — and this is just the first step in making our platform fully accessible to the AI economy. There's a lot more to come." The MCP standard, introduced by Anthropic, is gaining traction in both AI and crypto circles. Bitgo's implementation uses a public endpoint tied to its documentation system, giving AI clients direct access to updated materials without relying on static training data. The company also noted its Developer Portal already includes an "Ask AI" feature on documentation pages for users who don't want to configure external tools.
Industry Trend: Platforms Race to Go AI-Native
The MCP Server is available immediately to existing Bitgo developers at no additional cost. The launch lands amid a broader shift across the crypto sector, where platforms are racing to make their services AI-native. Competitors experiment with similar MCP-based systems, particularly for trading and onchain interactions. Bitgo's angle leans institutional, focusing on custody, wallets, staking, and settlement. The thinking: if AI agents are going to manage serious capital, they need infrastructure built for compliance and scale. For now, the MCP Server handles the groundwork — faster development, cleaner integrations, and fewer excuses for developers to get lost in documentation. Heavier automation pieces appear to be waiting in the wings.
